TDF Open Doors to Present 2018 Graduation

Over 400 guests including current and past New York City high school students, and the performing arts professional mentors who have participated in TDF Open Doors, the theatre arts mentoring program that TDF founded in 1998 with playwright Wendy Wasserstein, will attend this year's graduation at 5:30pm on Monday, June 4 at The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College (524 West 59th Street, NYC).

It has been announced that Tamara Tunie will direct JAZZLAND: in Concert, a new musical inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, set in Depression-era Harlem at the height of the Harlem Renaissance.

JAZZLAND: in Concert, a new musical inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, and set in Harlem, circa the 1930s at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, will begin rehearsals in March, and is scheduled for a limited run at the HSA Theatre, 649 Saint Nicholas Avenue, in New York City.  Performances are scheduled for two consecutive weekends, beginning on Friday, May 11 through Sunday, May 20.

Leyland Simmons is a rising choreographer who is on the move to big things. His dance training began at the Royal Academy School of Dance under Barbara Devereaux in Anchorage, Alaska. From there, he went on to study dance at several notable schools such as Dance Theatre of Harlem, Miami City Ballet, The School of American Ballet, and The Ailey School, among others. He is a graduate of the Professional Performing Arts High School in New York City, and is a former member of Ailey II and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. As an educator, he is a certified teacher in the American Ballet Theatre Pre-Primary to Level 3 curriculum, holds a Master's degree in Dance Education from NYU, has taught at several studios such as Steps on Broadway, and is currently the Resident Choreographer at the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA).

Harlem School of the Arts Dance to present the Harlem City Music Hall Dance Spectacular to honor Dancer Jennifer Jones, the first African American Radio City Music Hall Rockette. Written, directed and choreographed by HSA's Dance Director Aubrey Lynch II, the rhythmic, storytelling dance program will feature The Harlemettes and the The Harlem Rockets. The show will take place on Sunday, June 19, 2016, from 1:00PM-2:30PM and 5:00PM-6:30PM, at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College located at 695 Park Avenue, New York, New York, 10065. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the door, $20 for Group Tickets and $25 for students and seniors; and are available for pre-purchase at www.hsanyc.org/harlemcitymusichall.

Lynch Theater at John Jay College (524 West 59th Street, NYC).   TDF's Open Doors was the first arts education program to receive a special Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre when it received the special honor in 2012. This year, Open Doors had 30 mentors working with 24 groups of students from New York City high schools.
