“The Rock has made a lot of trouble for a lot of people since the day of the picnic.”
The year is 1900, the location Appleyard College, a private girls’ school near Melbourne, the date, St Valentine’s Day. It’s a blistering summer’s day and four pupils and their teacher set off for a picnic at nearby Hanging Rock. They were supposed to be back in time for dinner. All but one vanish, never to be seen again.
The events that happened on that St Valentine’s Day affected so many lives, so many people, and so many generations ahead.
The great mystery of the picnic at Hanging Rock remains. Or rather, mysteries. For two questions lie at the heart of both the legend and its continued popularity. Is the story true? And, if it is, what happened to those girls?
The Theatre Guild is thrilled to present the SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE of Joan Lindsay’s enduring, chilling Australian cult classic, adapted for the stage by Tom Wright. Five young performers struggle to solve the mystery of the missing girls and their teacher. Their tale will terrify the pants off you!
Will there ever be an explanation for what happened on that summer’s day?
