“Mefloquine Dreams” is a play exploring the damaging effects of an anti-malaria drug, mefloquine, and its psychoactive properties. In some instances, this drug mysteriously attacks the mind, leaving one with side effects including insomnia, psychosis, paranoia, anxiety and even suicidal/homicidal ideations and attempts. Another side effect is strange dreams, commonly referred to as “mefloquine dreams.”
Delusions for some can be so strong that the individual can no longer tell what’s real and what’s not. The question of why this drug is still on the market for civilians after it was banned from the military and Peace Corps remains unanswered.
“Mefloquine Dreams” is a dark comedy following a soldier suffering from mefloquine toxicity, and also a study on anxious movement and character work through guided meditation.
