Victoria Clark To Appear In Song And Conversation At CSC, One Night Only

Complementing performances of Tony Award-winning actress and director Victoria Clark's production of Conor McPherson's new version of Strindberg's The Dance of Death, Classic Stage Company (CSC; Artistic Director, John Doyle) presents the second installment of its new Classic Conversations series. The series began with acclaimed actor Raúl Esparza on the occasion of his "blisteringly good" (New York Magazine) turn in Bertolt Brecht's Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui; another conversation will be announced this spring. The March 5 at 7pm event will serve as a rare, intimate, and engaging distillation of Clark's life in theater through conversation-with CSC Artistic Director John Doyle and celebrated music director Ted Sperling-and song. Sperling, who memorably worked with Clark on The Light in the Piazza, for which they both received Tony Awards, will also accompany Clark on piano for the musical portion of the evening. This one-night-only engagement takes place Tues, March 5 at 7pm at Classic Stage Company (136 E 13th Street, New York); tickets are $100-$150 and can be purchased at classicstage.org or 212-352-3101 (or toll free 866-811-411). The Dance of Death runs in repertory with director Shariffa Ali's staging of Yaël Farber's Mies Julie through March 10.

Victoria Clark maintains a remarkable career as actor, teacher, and director. She mentors actors and singers from every generation in vocal technique, acting, and musical theater interpretation while at the same time inspiring audiences through her own performances as an actor in every medium.

A native Texan, Clark graduated from The Hockaday School in 1978, and then cum laude from Yale University in 1982 with a degree in music. Her passion for stage directing led her to the graduate musical theater writing program at New York University where she worked with composers and writers shaping new works.

Her acting career began when a prominent casting director saw her present material at New York University and cast her in the original Broadway production of Sunday in the Park with George. Since then, she has co-starred in twelve Broadway shows, and countless off-Broadway and regional productions. Clark received the 2005 Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for her luminous portrayal of Margaret Johnson in The Light in the Piazza, and received three additional Tony nominations for her work in Sister Act, Cinderella, and Gigi.

Her films include Wanderland, The Happening, Cradle Will Rock, Tickling Leo, Harvest, Main Street, and Archaeology of a Woman. Televisions credits include The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair (Fall 2018), The Good Wife, Homeland, Mercy, Law and Order, and Law and Order SVU.

Clark is currently directing Conor McPherson's version of August Strindberg's The Dance of Death at CSC. Prior to this she directed the world premiere of Scaffolding for "Inner Voices." In 2016, she directed Newton's Cradle (New York Musical Theater Festival, Best Musical & Best Director), The Trouble with Doug (Fredericia Theater in Denmark), Hansel and Gretl and Heidi and Günther (Village Theater Festival of New Musicals), and Mary Jo Shen's Paper Piano. She has also directed for the Philadelphia Opera Theater, Texas Opera Theater, Chautauqua Opera and the 92nd Street Y. Clark recently directed the short film For Me & My Gal for NikoFrank Productions.

Clark has taught in numerous universities and conservatories world-wide including Yale University and Juilliard. In 2014-2015, she was the Artist-In-Residence for Pace University in New York, where she directed The Light in the Piazza. She is currently creating a solo autobiographical play. Her solo debut CD Fifteen Seconds of Grace is available through PS Classics.
