Russian Arts Theater Presents Encore Run Of ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE: POETRY AND MUSIC UNDER STALINIST REGIME

"Poetry is respected only in this country - people are killed for it. There's no place where more people are killed for it." --Osip Mandelstam

The Russian Arts Theater and Studio (TRATS) continues its 2019 season with an encore run of Enemies Of The People: Poetry and Music Under Stalinist Regime. After selling out two previous runs at Pushkin Hall, renowned Russian director Aleksey Burago leads a critically-acclaimed ensemble featuring actors Michael Donaldson, Roman Freud, Luisa Menzen, Ariel Polanco, Paulo Quiros, Tom Schubert, Lana Stimmler and Di Zhu.

During Stalin's stormy and restless reign, writers faced intense censorship and scrutiny. As their lives turned impossibly difficult under tyranny, the poet became in return a figure of power and popularity. Remarkably, novelists, poets and musicians from the early decades of the Soviet Union produced some of the most imaginative and redemptive works in the history of the twentieth century. This February, join The Russian Arts Theater & Studio for an evening of wine, poetry, memoirs, and live music at Pushkin Hall as we commemorate the works of Anna Akhmatova, Osip Mandelstam, Mikhail Bulgakov, Dmitry Shostakovich, Boris Pasternak and more. Performed in English.

St. Petersburg-native director Aleksey Burago has directed many works to critical acclaim, most recently the sold-out production of The Master and Margarita, Or, The Devil Comes to Moscow. Burago is a former protege of the late Pyotr Fomenko and famous for his work in Russian stages and TV, including The Hermitage Theater and Aleksandrinka Theater (Beyond Recognition), Moscow TV (Queen of Spades), Youth Theater (The Emperor's New Clothes, Stoned), Interatelier Theater (Fandor and Liz), and The Baltic House Theater (Camille). Among his productions in New York are Ah, My Dear Andersen! (New York Time Out Critic's Pick), Wonder Bread (Winner of Best Show at the United Solo Fesitval) Uncle Vanya, My Uncle Chekhov, Three Sisters, Avenue of Wonder and Crime and Punishment.

Encore performances for Enemies Of The People will take place February 16th to February 24th, 2019, and will play for eight performances only. Performances will take place at Pushkin Hall, located at The Center at West Park. The venue is located at 165 W86th Street, New York, NY 10024.
