About Ragtime the Musical – Musical Drama

Rehearsals: July 30 - August 22, 2019 | Performances: August 23 - September 15, 2019

At the dawn of a new century, everything is changing… and anything is possible. Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, three distinctly American tales are woven together – that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician – united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Together, they confront history's timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America.

About Deathtrap – Comedy Thriller

Rehearsals: September 17 - October 19, 2019 | Performances: October 11 - 27, 2019

Seemingly comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college – a thriller which Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway hit. Sidney’s plan is to offer collaboration to the student, an idea which the young man quickly accepts. Thereafter suspense mounts steadily as the plot begins to twist and turn with devilish cleverness, and with such abundance of thrills and laughter, that audiences will be held enthralled until the final, startling moments of the play.

About A Christmas Carol – A Ghost Story of Christmas – Holiday Drama

Rehearsals: October 28 - November 21, 2019 | Performances: November 22 - December 22, 2019

Michael Wilson's adaptation of Dickens’ classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge distills the essence of the holiday spirit in a series of sights, sounds and splendors that all but guarantee audiences leave bursting with a feeling of Christmas. If Alfred Hitchcock had done A Christmas Carol, he'd have done it exactly like this. Wilson's high-spirited and intelligent handling of the 1843 novella is scary, delightful, dazzling, and laugh-out-loud funny.

About Violet – Musical

Rehearsals: January 2 - 23, 2020 | Performances: January 24 - February 9, 2020

As a girl, Violet was struck by a wayward axe blade when her father was chopping wood, leaving her with a visible scar across her face. With enough money finally saved, she's traveling across the Deep South in 1964 towards a miracle – the healing touch of a TV evangelist who will make her beautiful. Although she may not succeed in having the scar on her face healed, Violet is able to repair those scars that are lying deeper than her skin. On the way, she meets a young, African-American soldier whose love for her reaches far past her physical imperfections.

About Ben Hur – Comedy

Rehearsals: February 11 - 27, 2020 | Performances: February 28 - March 15, 2020

Based on one of the timeless stories of one of the best-selling books of the nineteenth century, this stage adaptation condenses the epic tale as it follows an amateur theatre troupe as they produce the massive tale of the fictional Jewish prince and merchant Judah Ben-Hur. He falls to galley slave and rises to champion charioteer within Jerusalem during the life of Jesus Christ, while the actors struggle along through the piece as rivalries form and offstage romances interfere. Complete with chariot race, sea battle, and stage combat, Patrick Barlow weaves his compressed style popularized by The 39 Steps into one of the largest stories ever told.

About Matilda the Musical– Musical

Rehearsals: March 31 - April 23, 2020 | Performances: April 24 - May 24, 2020

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence, and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

About Grease – Musical Comedy

Rehearsals: June 16 - July 9, 2020 | Performances: July 20 - August 2, 2020

Sandy Dumbrowski, the new girl in town, and Danny Zuko, the school’s coolest greaser, have a secret summertime romance - but when they get back to school, everything is different. Sandy attempts to navigate the tricky Rydell High School social waters and catch Danny’s attention again, but Danny is chiefly concerned with maintaining his tough-guy reputation. In the end, the Pink Ladies help Sandy figure out how to win back the leader of the Burger Palace Boys.

ABOUT THE GARDEN THEATRE

Garden Theatre of Winter Garden celebrates its 12th anniversary during the 2019-2020 performance season. Originally built in 1935 as a single-screen cinema, the theatre was the first in Central Florida built for “talkies” and was a gathering place for locals to watch the latest newsreels and films of the day. The building was restored to its former glory in 2008, and the 295-seat Garden Theatre, with a current annual budget of $1.5 million, has grown to a performing arts center with extensive programming that includes professional live theatre, concerts, dance, special events, movies and a thriving year-round arts education program.
