Review: THE JUNGLE BOOK KIDS at Theatre Royal Nelson

The Jungle Book is the second half of a double-feature, along with The Aristocats, presented by Nelson Youth Theatre. The two shows are about 40 minutes long each, with an interval between them, which makes it an ideal outing for young children.

Adapted from Disney's beloved animated film, The Jungle Book is the story of young "man-cub" Mowgli (Joelle Noar) who has a desire to live in the jungle. Featuring a host of colourful animal friends, they help Mowgli to escape the notorious Shere Khan.

It was clearly the better-known of the two stories with the crowd clapping along to the upbeat rendition of Bare Necessities, led by the dynamic Baloo (Ella Danson).

Diminutive Joelle Noar stole the show with her larger-than-life portrayal of Mowgli alongside Freya Lee who brought lots of fun to Bagheera, Mowgli's black panther friend and protector.

The Jungle Book had some behind the scenes star-power in the form of three 16-year-old girls, directors Brooklyn Saunders and Chelsea Moffitt-Neve and choreographer Sophie McCarlie. Sophie added some fun dance moves to the young ensemble, especially in jazz-singing orangutan King Louie's funky 'I wanna be like you'.

The Jungle Book and The Aristocats double-feature are at the Theatre Royal Nelson 2.00pm, 15 to 20 April. Bookings available from theatreroyalnelson.co.nz.
