Green Space Announces a Diverse Roster of Artists for its Signature Programs this March

Green Space is pleased to announce a diverse roster of artists for its signature programs this March. Take Root will present an evening of work by DeLucia Benson Dance and Six Degrees Dance, curated by Chris Ferris, on March 15th and 16th, and Fertile Ground showcases works-in-progress by multiple dance artists on March 17th.

TAKE ROOT, now in its 10th season, nurtures dance artists at established stages in their careers, pairing them in a split bill or full evening-length program. This monthly series supports dance makers' experimentation and growth by providing our venue, Green Space, along with full technical and marketing support to present their work to the NYC public.

DeLucia Benson Dance will show a duet of works. The first set will include Crux Acclaim and Quintessence. Crux Acclaim is a work of physical dance that creates shapes and patterns that excites the mind and spirit. This work sets a tone for a larger work that explores concepts of contrast. It moves quickly and is dense in movement and visual complexity. Quintessence is a work with dynamic shifts in mood, timing, and movement quality. The movement embodies restriction and freedom, fear and confidence, loneliness and empathy. Dancers support each other with perfectly timed catches and carries. Strength is apparent as the women collide and embrace. Music will be provided by cellist Loren Dempster. The second set of works is an exploration of movement, music, sound, and materials. We will explore the contrast of the ordinary to extraordinary. We will use different ordinary materials to create interesting movement scenarios. We explore movement using a white sheet. It creates shapes and sounds, it creates movement and hinders it. The costumes, in partnership with the movement, create sound that drives the dance and offer an unconventional musical score.

Six Degrees Dance's as yet untitled piece explores ideas of fear, aggression, anxiety, apathy and the false panacea of distraction as it relates to today's social climate. Performers, shrouded by thin veils of complacency, separate themselves from the world around them in an attempt at safety and protection. But when they remove those veils, what do they see? And how will they respond? The piece will be performed by Shanise Dews, Eilish Henderson, Sarah Lapinsky, Hanna McClean, Cecly Placenti, and Jillian Sawyer, with music by Armand Amar, Blondie, Philip Glass, and Jon Hopkins.

We are determined to bring dance into venues that serve culturally and economically diverse audiences. It is our passion to give people a live, authentic, uniquely moving experience that inspires them to experience something that motivates them and intrigues them in a new way. We are continually creating amazing, exciting, and exhilarating moments of live movement excellence coupled with musical brilliance.

Six Degrees Dance is a contemporary dance company whose mission is to create a community for artists where we work together in an encouraging, fulfilling setting to create something greater than the sum of its parts. We believe in true collaboration and in taking the skills and talents of each individual and using and sharing these gifts to create something awesome. Through this respect and acceptance of diverse ideas and contributions, we wish to bring our creations to equally diverse audiences.

FERTILE GROUND has supported emerging and established artists for 13 seasons, showcasing the work of over 50 choreographers each year. The non-curated program features 5-6 dance makers each evening and includes a post-performance discussion with wine, moderated by Green Space's Artistic Director, Valerie Green.

DANCE ENTROPY / GREEN SPACE

Dance Entropy Inc. created its company home, Green Space, in Long Island City in 2005. Housed in a former silk factory with magnificent views overlooking Manhattan, the lofty 2000 square foot space offers an affordable venue for the creation and practice of dance. Green Space and Dance Entropy are committed to accessibility, diversity, education, and collaboration, providing dance artists and their work space to grow in New York City through monthly performance platforms, classes and rehearsal space.

DIRECTIONS
By Subway: N, W, or the 7 to Queensboro Plaza, the first stop outside Manhattan. Take the North pedestrian bridge to the street. Look to your right, you will see Crescent St., turn right on Crescent and walk to 38th Ave. Turn left on 38th Ave. Walk one block to 24th street. Green Space is in the red brick, four-story building. (Approximately a ten-minute walk.)
