Just recently, Jakarta Art House hosted its latest stage production, Catch Me If You Can the Musical. This was an adaptation of the 2002 movie of the same name starring Leonardo DiCaprio, following the same storyline: the alleged true story of Frank Abagnale Jr., a convicted felon who committed plenty of frauds at his young age and has now reformed as a security consultant. 

Ivan Tangkulung, a cross-genre musician and composer, has released the song Terang on December 20, 2024. This song, originally written by the late Glenn Fredly, is performed by the Ivan Tangkulung Big Band featuring renowned vocalist Louise Monique. This version of Terang is made in the dynamic and expressive musical style of the big band genre.

When it was first announced back in May, Musikal Dangdut: Kukejar Kau Sayang (lit. Dangdut Musical: I’ll Chase You My Love) made waves throughout the Indonesian musical theater community. It was a provocative, intriguing proposition: dangdut AND musical theater? It’s unheard of.

Polarisasi – the original musical about Indonesian politics by Da Lopez Brothers – returned to the stage of Graha Bhakti Budaya on October 10-13, following its initial run in February. This rerun (also called Leg 2) brought new direction, new artistic design, and few new cast members, while telling mostly the same story as before.

Hi Jakarta Production will present a day of performances later this month. LIT 3 will feature a captivating Musical Theater Mini Showcase and dance.

Hi Jakarta Dance will host a dance camp this December. At this event, participants can elevate their dance skills and have a chance to perform at the final showcase on December 14.

The community theater Jakarta Players has announced their 2024 production: Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol by Tim Mula. The show is an adaptation that offers a fresh take on the timeless story of redemption and the spirit of Christmas.

MUSIKAL BELAKANG PANGGUNG, an original musical produced by the advocacy community Lentera Sintas Indonesia in 2020, is made available to watch until Sunday, October 20 2024. This broadcast is meant to educate people on sexual harassment and sexual violence happening in art spaces, inspired by a recent string of such cases in the local art scene.

On Sunday, October 12, the musical theater community Svatuhari put on their 13th production: Idealita Analogi Elegi at Teater Salihara. This show is a retooling of Idealita, which ran in June of 2023. The musical still observes the power of idealism and reality set in a contemporary setting, but is otherwise a new theatrical experience.

On October 4 and 5, 2024, the community choir Cantalevia staged Don’t Stop Believin’: A Tribute to Glee Concert at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta. As the title suggests, the concert presentation is a tribute to the modern classic American TV show that ran from 2009 to 2015 and introduced a lot of Indonesians to show choir and musicals.

What did our critic think of 2AM at TEATER BESAROn August 24th 2024, LSPR Institute’s Performing Arts Communication Batch 25 “Waka Waka Production” brought 2AM: The Musical to the stage of TIM’s Teater Besar. Directed by Amelia Angeliqa with the assistance of Excel Yeremia, bringing forth four main characters, six supporting ones, ten ensemble members, and 15 original songs, they delivered 2AM for their final 6th-semester assignment for the subject ‘Plan & Production Management’.

HiSuperstar Musical Showcase is back again next month. Themes are as follows: Show 1: Encanto, Show 2: Frozen, Show 3: Aladdin, and Show 4: Moana.

On August 16th, 2024, in collaboration with Tiga Dua Satu and Indonesia Kaya, Jakarta Movin performed the media preview of the musical Interaksi (“Interaction”), adapted from the lyrics of the most-streamed musician of Indonesia, Tulus. Directed by the founder of Jakarta Movin, Interaksi brought forth a powerful performance that provoked laughter through its interaction with the audience.
