Zakir Hussain And Eric Harland At Auer Performance Hall April 14

Drumming not only crosses cultures, but unites all of us in the dance of the heart. Zakir Hussain is the acknowledged master tabla player of one the world's most sophisticated musical heritages, the classical North Indian, and also a student of an astonishing array of percussion traditions. On his return visit to Purdue University Fort Wayne, Zakir will bring with him an incredible group of master percussionists.

Zakir Hussain's Masters of Percussion, an outgrowth of Zakir's duet tours with his late father, the legendary Ustad Allarakha, began their biennial appearances in 1996 to provide a platform for rarely heard rhythm traditions from India. Over time, the ensemble has expanded to include great drummers and percussionists from many world traditions, including jazz, as well as the occasional stringed instrument. The centennial year of Allarakha's birth, 2019, will be a very special Masters of Percussion tour.

On April 14, Zakir will be joined by the astonishing Niladri Kumar on sitar; the peerless jazz drummer Eric Harland (Charles Lloyd, Sangam) on Western drums; and the remarkable folk Kerala Drummers from the Southwestern coast of India. Performing together and separately, the evening of master percussionists and sitar will be awe-inspiring. Zakir Hussain is a true maestro who can bring out the magic in everyone on the stage - and in the audience.

International music lovers will not want to miss this incredibly affordable performance. Purdue Fort Wayne College of Visual and Performing Arts and Shruti Indian Cultural Society of Fort Wayne, have made it possible for tickets to be priced at $10 each. Students with a school ID are admitted free of charge. Zakir Hussain's Masters of Percussion is presented with support from the Shruti Indian Cultural Society and the Purdue Fort Wayne College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA), Arts United, Indiana Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The CVPA and Shruti are concluding their seventh season offering Indian cultural experiences for audiences in northeast Indiana and are pleased to present yet another exciting collaboration to introduce patrons to some of the most acclaimed international Indian performers in music, dance, and theatre.
