STORY OF ERRORS (in Hindi)

Coffee, and the conversations that revolve around it form the theme of this charming play. "Story of Errors" is written by Siddhant Mago and was originally created by Team Roobaroo under the name "Caféstorea, 3 Janak Rd." Set in the year 1959 but still contemporary, the play begins with the ever-enchanting voice of Ameen Sayani on Radio Ceylon's Binaca Geet Mala. The play is presented in the form of snapshots. From breaking the ice to creating a perfect setting for love confessions, from nostalgia to addiction, from disappointments to smiles; coffee accompanies one and all.

The play is directed by Swati and performed by Akshara's Hindi Workshop students.

LOVE-SHOVE AUR KHURANA AUNTIE (in Hindi)

Directed by Anasuya Vaidya

Akshara Theatre launches its Hindi Repertory with the delightful comedy "Love-shove Aur Khurana Auntie". The play is set in a typical Delhi park, with roadside romeos, romancing couples, dance groups, power-walking aunties, footballers and the bullying guard. Aryan and Shweta discover the meaning of pyaar versus society-ordained vivaah, while the loving couple Raj and Priti and their best friend Nupur find their love and friendship threatened by Khurana auntie's gossiping tongue.

Performed by Surabhi Sahni, Mohit Gupta, Tarun Kohli, Udit Maheshwari, Yash Joshi, and Varun Mittal with the Akshara Repertory. Stand-up comedian Kishore Dayani makes his acting debut as the hilarious Khurana Auntie.

THE RAMAYANA

Gopal Sharman's internationally acclaimed theatrical masterpiece, The Ramayana has been praised the world over for the dramatic intensity of Sharman's script, which explores the human characters of Rama and Sita, with reverence, delicacy and insight, through some of the most exquisite stage writing in modern theatre. When The Ramayana was performed on Broadway, it was hailed as "India's Gift to Broadway" by the New York Times. The Times, London found it "Noble, commanding and heroic". The Indian Express exclaimed "The Ramayana is etched in tremendous beauty", and the Hindustan Times said: "This Ramayana challenges you to look at the meaning of the story from a brand new angle." In its original one-woman version The Ramayana was performed on Broadway in New York, London's West End, the Smithsonian Institution, United nations Headquarters and more than 35 cities and towns in India.

The current version still has Jalabala Vaidya performing the opening and closing Acts of the play, with a cast of superbly talented young actors performing the scenes in between, creating an exciting and innovative theatrical experience. Together, Gopal, Jalabala and their young cast explore the magic and mystery of Rama - "in whose grace the dumb babble love's profundities and the lame prance gaily over unscaled peaks."

THE CURSE OF HAMLET

woven around the basic idea of William Shakespeare's Hamlet

The year is 1993. Abhigyan Theatre, established for more than two decades and situated in Connaught Place in the heart of New Delhi, has been presenting a successful production of William Shakespeare's Hamlet for the last 25 years. Hamlet has always been performed by Abhigyan's founder, Sarveshwar Sharma, who is as immersed in the character of Hamlet as he is in alcohol and his arrogant belief in his acting prowess.

Tainted with the madness of Hamlet, his relations with his actress-wife Bhavna and his 23 year old actor-son Siddharth have also soured. Siddharth's girlfriend Charu wants him to leave the theatre group, but Siddharth wants to play Hamlet once, just to make a point to his father.

The manager of Abhigyan Theatre is Chetan Saxena, who too is obsessed with playing Hamlet and has a deep grudge about never getting a chance to do so. Chetan, Bhavna and Sarveshwar were friends from college days and their lives are intricately and perhaps inextricably bound together. Their lives could have continued in the same way, if not for that fateful incident.

What if the separation between the character and the actor, ceases? What if the character steps off the stage and enters your life, your space? The conflict, struggle and dilemmas between real and unreal, between life and art, between actor and character, between the self and the very meaning of existence -- this is the complex, intriguing, spell-binding story of The Curse of Hamlet.
