Newsies at Moorhead High Theatre

There is a reason that many consider Moorhead High Schools Theatre Department as one of the top in the area. They always seem to step it up every single year and this was no exception. Director Rebecca Meyer-Larson said that she was waiting online and secured the rights for Newsies about 30 seconds after they became available. This is a show she has wanted to put on since the 1992 movie.

Brian Cole once again directed an amazing 22 member pit orchestra that was set up in back/side stage area instead of in the "pit".

It's always hard to single out performances when they are so many talented young people in the cast. The supporting cast and ensemble do such a wonderful job bringing the whole show together. I was very impressed with how many 9th graders were in the cast (a few in some prominent roles).

Kaden Moszer as Jack Kelly was so good as the leader of the Newsies. He had so many standout moments that it's hard to pick. I really enjoyed his interaction with Crutchie in Santa Fe and of course moving right into Carrying the Banner. His performance with Katherine on Never Planned on You was another great moment. I also loved his scenes with Pulitzer.

Jonah Hanson as Crutchie was such a likable character. He played the part perfectly and his scene on Letter from the Refuge was another standout.

Sophia Klindt as Katherine Plumber was simply amazing. Her solo on Watch What Happens... WOW. This young lady has a very powerful voice and great stage presence.

Charlie Maki as Davey was outstanding. Hard to believe he is only in 9th grade, but he definitely deserved this role. He really stood out on Seize the Day and I can't wait to see him continue on in theatre.

Noah Meline (6th grade) as the 10 year old Les is a future star. I have enjoyed watching him over the years, including his show stealing performance this past summer in Trollwoods Honk Jr. This young man did not miss a beat with his older co-stars and even manage to steal a few scenes for himself.

Anna Larson as Medda Larkin is another young lady with a powerful voice. Her performance on that's Rich was outstanding.

Quinn Johnson as Joseph Pulitzer played the newspaper mogul very well and his solo on The Bottom Line was excellent.

Margaret Dickey as Wiesel was another great character, although she didn't have a solo her performance was wonderful and the hairdo was very cool!

Overall this was another phenomenal show by Moorhead High Theatre. You still have 2 more chances to see the show and I highly recommend that you do.
