BREAKDOWN

MARY LENNOX – Child to play 10 years old, proper British accent. (Range: Young Voice, Ab3-D5) She is sent to live with her uncle, Archibald, when her parents die from cholera in India. Quite the curious explorer, and often finding herself in trouble. Stubborn and always fighting for what she believes in. She is strong willed and quick tempered at first. Must be a very strong actor and singer, able to handle the size of this role as Mary carries the show. It is a huge undertaking with a lot of lines, songs, rehearsal time, etc. We are looking for a child that has an old soul and yet an innocence all at the same time. She has lived more life by age 10 than some live in their lifetime. Tragically losing both her very absent parents, the culture shock of moving from one country to another and thrust into a household that is cold and also loveless. She has a lot to work through and deal with and we need a young child that can handle a very deep emotional experience and has a deeper understanding of life. Must move well/be coordinated.

ARCHIBALD CRAVEN - Male, 35-45, proper British accent (Range: Bari/Tenor, C3-A4) Mary's uncle and Lord of Misselthwaite Manor. He has a hunch-back. Haunted by the past and afraid of the future, he locks himself away both physically and mentally. Mary painfully reminds him too much of his wife, Lily, who died ten years ago from complications in childbirth. He must be an incredible actor to take us on more of a journey than we are used to seeing. Often he is this brooding man dealing with so much pain the entire show and can come across as lifeless and at one level until the end of the show. He has to go through so much more than that and have so many colors to his journey. He must have the voice of an angel, be attractive, sweet, kind hearted, sympathetic, but also someone that is deeply angry, selfish, hurt and has decided to completely neglect his child due to his inconsolable state. Experience with ballroom dancing is a plus, but at least needs to be coordinated.

LILY – THIS ROLE IS CAST.

DR. NEVILLE CRAVEN - Male, 35-45, proper British accent (Range: Baritone, C3-F#4) Archibald’s younger brother. Trapped by the idea that he is responsible for the care-taking of Colin. Even though he was never loved back by Lily, he is still in love with her and grieving the loss of what never was. This adds to his unwillingness to move on and leave Misselthwaite. He is often portrayed as the villain in this piece, but must believe he is doing what is best at all times. He is jealous of his brother having been willed the family estate and the fact Archibald got the girl he pined after. He is serious, manipulative, incredibly charming and handsome. This actor has to be able to turn on a dime and be a dynamic actor with a rich and stunning voice.

MARTHA - Female, 18-30, Yorkshire accent, (Range: Mezzo-Soprano Belt, G3-D5) A faithful housemaid. She is from a lower class family and very in tune with Celtic ways and traditions. Her wisdom is beyond her years. She is both sisterly and motherly. She is quirky, honest, has a quick whit and fantastic sense of humor. Must move well/be coordinated.

DICKON - Male, 16-25 Yorkshire accent (Range: Tenor, D3-G4) Martha's younger brother. Looks after the sick plants and animals within the Misselthwaite grounds—including Mary. He is a young man who is between the world of child imagination and adult reasoning. Befriends Mary and convinces her to take care of the Garden. He is of the Earth; a free spirit. He is charming, sweet, fun and helps Mary find herself. Looking for an honest and great actor with a great voice. Must move well/be coordinated.

COLIN CRAVEN – Child to play 10 years old, proper British accent (Range: Boy Soprano/Young Voice, A3-E5) Lily & Archibald’s ten year-old son. Spent his life in bed due to medical conditions related to his premature birth. He is very stubborn and throws temper tantrums to get what he wants as it is the only way for him to get attention. He believes his father hates him for causing Lily’s death, which is a lot to carry around for anyone, let alone a child. Has to be a very strong actor capable of playing this complex young character. We’re not looking for Colin to just be an angry, whiney brat, we want to also understand and be able to sympathize with him. He is often completely unlikeable and is a very hard role to play/cast. We are hoping to find not only a child with the voice of angel, but one that can take on the physical and emotional demands of this role head on.

BEN WEATHERSTAFF - Male, 60 or over, Yorkshire accent. (Range: E3-D#4) Head gardener. Knows a great deal about the history of the garden and the grounds it sits on. He has worked for the family for many years. He is a self-proclaimed crusty, grouchy man who is a sour as he looks. He has a great friendship and affection with the robin and you see that he is truly a sweet and tender man that cares very much about what he does. He takes pride in his work and loves what he does. We are looking for an incredible and honest actor who can sing.

MRS. MEDLOCK - Female, Age Flexible 30’s-60’s+, proper British accent. (Range: Flexible, Non solo singing/acting role that must sing and hold parts) Archibald’s housekeeper. As cold as the Misselthwaite Manor. She is no nonsense and frightening at times. Ideally she looks as cold and stern as she is; she shouldn’t look cuddly or warm. She comes off as though she has no soul, but she’s just incredibly serious. She runs a tight ship and makes certain that the house is running smoothly. She has her hands very full with keeping Collin under control, quiet and hidden and is not happy about having another child in the house. She is in fear of losing her job and therefore will do whatever is necessary to keep the house in order. She must make a large impact through simplicity and draw you in. While most of the time she is stoic, she is also perplexed that she might have met her match when meets Mary; who appears as stoic and soulless as she is. We are looking for an incredible actor that can bring you to the edge of your seat. She must be also able to be explosive when needed. Acting will main consideration for this role.

The following roles will be cast from the ensemble:

The ensemble in this show is made up of 8 men and 7 women that play everything from ghosts to Misselthwaite staff. They must be versatile actors and able to bring much depth to their work. We are looking to bring a completely new purpose for them in this show and want a cast of smart actors for this ensemble.

ROSE LENNOX - Female, 28-38, proper British accent. (Range: Soprano, A3-D6, must belt as well as have a legit soprano voice) Mary's mother and Lily’s sister. She is a woman with much to learn. She is much like her name; delicate and stunning in appearance, but watch out for the thorns. She is vain, self involved, loves her husband and is extremely disconnected with her child. She has virtually no relationship with her and priorities fashion, parties and functions over being a parent. Very loyal to her husband and refuses to leave India during the cholera outbreak that ultimately takes her life. She dies not only without ever showing true love and affection to her daughter, but without ever teaching her anything or giving her any life shills. She doesn’t understand how her sister, Lily, could truly love Archibald as he is a hunchback and she sees only the outside of a person. In the show we see her in memory form when she was alive and in her prime and we also see her in death; prevented from crossing over until she finally learns and realizes what she has missed and ultimately helping Mary to find the love she always wanted and deserved. We are looking for a woman who will give this more depth than it has ever seen before and go on a very different journey that has been conveyed in productions past. We will be focusing more on her parents than usual to go in line with the concept for the show. She should be not only gorgeous and have a beautiful voice, but be a fiercely talented actor. We want someone that can bring so much more to the role; beyond what is written. Ideally she moves with much grace and has a sense of period in her body. Ideally she moves very well and has experience with ballroom/partner dancing.

CAPTAIN ALBERT LENNOX - Male, 30-40, proper British accent. (Range: Tenor, D3-A5) Mary's father and Rose’s husband. Tries to send Rose and Mary out of India during the cholera outbreak, but cannot convince her to go alone with Mary as it makes her uncomfortable to be alone with her own daughter. He reluctantly allows her to stay and they both perish from the disease. He loves his daughter, but is a Captain and is constantly working so therefore more absent. He has much guilt for not forcing them to leave India and of doing anything to help strengthen the relationship with his daughter and wife. He is a charming and handsome man who loves his family. We see him both in memories past and in death. In death he is not able to cross over until he can help right the wrongs he caused his daughter and ensure that she is not just taken care of, but above all, loved. Ideally he moves well and has experience with ballroom/partner dancing.

FAKIR - Male, Age Flexible. Sings in Hindu, so an authentic Hindu sound and dialect is desired. He also sings in English and would need to also have a British accent. (Range: Tenor, C3-B4) Itinerant Hindu ascetic. Casting preference will go to ethnicity as written, but we will consider other actors of color.

AYAH - Female, Age Flexible (Range: Ensemble/Part Flexible) Mary's Indian nanny. She is beautiful and exotic. She was probably the closest thing to a mother that Mary had, but was a servant nonetheless. She sadly enabled Mary and never taught her much of anything, including basic life skills like getting dressed. She treated her like royalty and made sure Mary never lifted a finger. In death she is very invested in seeing Mary develop into the young lady she should be and find the love she never had. Casting preference will go to ethnicity as written, but we will consider other actors of color.

OTHER ROLES:

These roles are all ages 20s-50s and vocal range open. We need true sopranos, basses and everything in between. Their voices must be exquisite and they all much be fantastic actors and move well/be coordinated. Ideally a few of these men and women are either dancers that sing extremely well or at least have ballroom/partner dancing skills.

FEMALES: (all have a proper British accent)

ALICE/ MRS. WINTHROP – Actor will double as Alice and Mrs. Winthrop. Alice isRose’s friend. Mrs. Winthrop is the Headmistress of a private school. Prides herself on nurturing girls with tempers. Mary seems to be more than she can handle.

MRS. SHELLEY - Major Shelley's wife.

CLAIRE HOLMES - Major Holmes' wife.

MALES: (all have a proper British accent)

LIEUTENANT WRIGHT - Officer in Mary's father's unit.

LIEUTENANT SHAW - Fellow officer.

MAJOR SHELLEY - Officer.

MAJOR HOLMES - Officer.
