_______________

AVALON
Author: Melody Bates
Director: Joan Jubett
Dramaturg: Judith Jerome

DATES:
First rehearsal: July 22, 2019
Opening: August 15, 2019
Closing: August 25, 2019

SYNOPSIS:
AVALON is a one-of-a-kind site-specific theatrical event created by playwright-performer Melody Bates and sculptor Peter Beerits, in collaboration with Opera House Arts. Inspired by Arthurian and Celtic legends, it is both a traditional play and an unscripted, immersive “wander” through the world of Avalon and King Arthur. The play takes a page from shows like Punchdrunk’s “Sleep No More,” but seeks to land somewhere new: a spectacular encounter with the story of Avalon, with Beerits’s multi-acre woodland art installation of Nellieville as the stage for the play.

SEEKING:
For all roles we are seeking versatile, generous, and fearless actors with the chops to handle heightened text and grandeur as well as hijinks and comedy, and capable of powerful and precise physical and vocal expression. Skill in music (singing and/or instruments), dance, and stage combat may be useful. We are explicitly seeking a diverse company, in all respects, and we are more interested in the spirit and talent of the individual than any rigid physical type.

ROLES:
GUINEVERE
Female or female-identifying, 20s-50s. Graceful and beloved; funny, surprising, completely at ease as the center of attention. The Queen of the May.

LANCELOT
Male, male-identifying, or gender fluid/nonconforming, 20s-50s. Physically powerful, magnetic, charming; you can't take your eyes off him/them.

THE SHADOW
Male or male-identifying, 20s-40s. Wears anger on his sleeve. The adversary of the play in all incarnations, including Mordred.

THE PLAYER QUEEN
Female, female-identifying, or gender fluid/nonconforming. 20s-60s. Strong singer, ideally a musician as well. Bard, story-teller, jester, pied piper, shapeshifter.
