BREAKDOWN

BESTELLER is a funny and original new comedy about writers and how they write – the stories they tell and the secrets they keep. Three young novelists arrive at an isolated cottage where eccentric, mysterious Landlady Maureen offers a Writer’s Retreat to help them finish their new books. Shelley is creating a sexy romance set on a desert island, Damien is unleashing a bizarre and blackly comic tale of murder and mayhem, while Alex is staring at a blank page with no idea of how even to start. As the novelists settle into their new home, we see their three comical and compelling books suddenly come to life on stage.

MAUREEN – Female, to play 60s – 70s, all ethnicities. BRITISH ACCENT. Lively, eccentric in a joyful and clever way, loves life adventures, romantic at heart, optimist, supporter of all, sturdy, loyal. A bit mischievous. A hearty, healthy woman of sturdy stock. A big “walker” as many British are.

ALEX – Male, late 20s, all ethnicities. BRITISH ACCENT. Handsome, newcomer , optimist, well-mannered and optimistic

SHELLEY – Female, early 30’s, all ethnicities. BRITISH ACCENT. Energetic, bubbly, sexually romantic, harmless, comfortable with her fickleness, sexually attractive, self -involved, flirt, romantic writer, very attractive

DAMIEN – Male, early 30’s, all ethnicities. BRITISH ACCENT. Loves being the “tortured writer”, broody type, in love with his sense of being tormented, obedient in a way.

MULTIPLE CHARACTERS MAN (plays Sergio, Tibor, Victor/Brandon) – Male, early 30s, all ethnicities. BRITISH ACCENT. Unabashedly comedic handsome fellow, sexy, great physique, capable of various accents, unafraid of being the “romantic” foil to ridiculous situations.

MULTIPLE CHARACTERS WOMAN (plays Jessica, Maya, Tatyana/Crystal) – Female, early 30s. MULTIPLE ACCENTS INCLUDING BRITISH. Gifted with accents, can play over the top but with conviction.
