BREAKDOWN

SEEKING:

MAXIE BOSWELL – age 17, new boy to the school. Physically athletic, confident beyond his years, and with a mesmeric charisma David Starr is instantly attracted to. Whilst being made captain of the football team, Maxie also gets cast as Bill Sykes in the school play. Not afraid to rise to the challenge of a bully. Pop tenor voice.

AUNT VAL – 30s. Kath’s sister. David’s Aunt. Has had a string of unfulfilled relationships with me. Adores David and is the person closest to him that understands him. Grounded and strong in her opinions yet open-minded. Sharp-tongued. Also plays KATE BUSH when David’s bedroom poster comes alive to serve as a mentor to David. Great alto belt voice.

FRANCES BASSEY – Age 16, David’s best friend since childhood. Frances also struggles with a bullying culture and faces racism for being black, something she is determined to change. She is a strong support for David but not afraid to challenge him. Strong-minded and sharp. Great pop-belt voice.

CHRISSIE STARR – Age 17-18, David’s sister. Loves David deep down but struggles to show it. Hangs out with her new boyfriend, Squirrel, which takes up much of her time. Can’t wait to leave home and school and start her real life. Modern pop singer with mezzo soprano voice.

DENNIS GORDON – Age 12 (to be played by a short young adult), cast as Oliver in the school play. Has a slight speech impediment, which gets worse when nervous or bullied.
