VTA Presents 2019 Dayton Skyscrapers Art Exhibit

Victoria Theatre Association and Shango: Center for The Study of African-American Art and Culture presents the annual Visual Voices exhibit, DAYTON SKYSCRAPERS. The 2019 DAYTON SKYSCRAPERS exhibit, located in the Orchestra Lobby of the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, features art created by local African-American artists that reflects the broad and diverse career fields of African- Americans in the Miami Valley. The exhibit runs Feb. 5- March 31, 2019, and is free to the public.

DAYTON SKYSCRAPERS, sponsored by the DP&L Foundation and curated by Willis Bing Davis, is a metaphor for those local and regional African-Americans who stand tall in our minds and hearts for what they have achieved in their field, and their contributions to the quality of life of Dayton and the Miami Valley region. The 2019 honorees reflect high achievement in areas such as law, military, education, science, medicine and community service.

Judge Arthur O. Fisher; Judge Gerald Parker; Judge Alice O. McCollum; Dr. Karen Townsend, small businesswoman; Edward Dugger, engineer; Phyllis Bolds, physicist; Colonel Alphonso Trimble, military; Dr. Clarence Walls, arts administrator; Lelia I. Frances, community activist; Dr. Helen Octavia Dickens, medical; Jewelia Higgins, community activist; Terrelia Ogletree, community service, and Marlon Shackelford, community activist.

2019 DAYTON SKYSCRAPER ARTISTS

Abner Cope, Dwayne Daniel, Clifford Darrett, Willis Bing Davis, Horace Dozier, Al Harden, Kevin Harris, Morris Howard, James Pate, Debra Richardson-Wood, Craig Screven, Frances Turner, & Andrea Walker-Cummings.

An artist reception will be on Sunday, Feb. 24 from 2:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. in the Wintergarden of the Schuster Center. The reception is free and open to the public.

More about the Dayton Skyscrapers Art Projects

The goals of the Dayton Skyscrapers art project are to:

  • Identify and celebrate local and regional African Americans who have excelled in their field.
  • Celebrate local and regional African American visual artists.
  • Provide positive role models for urban youth.
  • Enhance the general community's appreciation of African American contributions to the Dayton Miami Valley region.

The exhibit confirms the fact that Dayton has many outstanding African American visual artists who bring their artistic vision to the project.

Funders for this project are Dayton Power and Light Foundation (corporate sponsor), and ZIKS Family Pharmacy.

Community Partner: Dayton Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
