It's good the the acting categories are at 5-6 nominees after de-gendering them. Every other category in awards are de-gendered with similar nominations.

Actors should receive no more, or less, than any other contributor to a show, male or female, or in number of possible nominations. If it's about equality, it's going in the right direction to give equality to the awards, in general.

The Tonys should do the same.

"

I would disagree for one main reason—almosteveryshow has one lighting designer, one sound designer, etc., but most have multiple cast members. There are maybe thirty people eligible for scenic design on Broadway this year but over a hundred people who could be nominated for performance. From a numbersstandpoint, I think actors need more potential nominations.
"

I would also add that if the Tonys were to degender acting categories just like the Outer Critics Circle Awards, there’d be a number of worthy performances that would’ve gotten nominated under normal circumstances snubbed.

Cabaret is also nominated for Outstanding Revival of a Musical. So make that two nominations.

I just meant for the performers.

My biggest takeaway is the lack of Hell's Kitchen in major categories.  The reviews had me thinking it may be the frontrunner for Best Musical, but now I'm back to thinking it's a two-way race between Suffs and Illinoise - or at best a three-way race.  It's such an odd year!

I wouldn’t count The Outsiders out. People love the fresh, young energy it’s bringing to Broadway.

I feel like it has to be said every year, but none of these awards are good precursors for how the Tonys will shake out. You can discern some trends but all of these awards are so idiosyncratic in what they cover and are such a small sample size they’re really not reliable as prediction tools beyond already obvious contenders.

While conceding it's meaningless for the Tonys, Justin Guarini being recognized here is nice to see. He was terrific in a show that otherwise was not.

So happy to see HLL remembered for both OCC and Drama League - hopefully Tony nominators will too!

I thought Justin Guarini and Jennifer Simard were both incredible in Once Upon... Unfortunately they submitted Guarini under lead actor at the Tonys which all but killed any sliver of a chance he had.

It does not really matter, as neither one was going to get a Tony nomination in supporting categories.  There is too much competition.  The fact that they got Outer Critics Circle nominations is pretty irrelevant, considering the nominations in many categories.

I think we both know that. The first thing I wrote was "While conceding it's meaningless for the Tonys..." and MayAudraBlessYou2 said he might have had, at best, a sliver of a chance in supporting. But competition aside, a remote chance in a category someone does belong in will almost always be better than their chances in a category where their placement is much more of a stretch. (Also, Simard did not get an Outer Critics Circle nomination. MayAudra was just expressing appreciation for her performance, not her awards chances.)

Funny enough, after a pretty mid Spring musicals on Broadway, the one I want to go back to is Once Upon a One More Time. At least I had fun there!
