i just saw the live filmed version from National Theatre Live at a local theatre here in the Palm Springs area, and as much as i LOVED the movie ALL ABGOUT EVE, i really did not like this production at all...first of all Gillian Anderson is all wrong for Margo...all the way through this drudgery i kept thinking how great Cate Blanchett would have been as Margo. Lily James who i have liked in so many other screen roles was not good either...in fact i find it hard to like any of the performances, the direction, the set, which was alll blood red colors in everything!...and even the projections on the screen used above the actor's heads were ugly and muddied...the only time i enjoyed this play was when a remark or two that i recognized from the screen play made me smile...even "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night", the great line spoken by Bette Davis in the movie, was bungled by Ms. Anderson...her reading of all her great lines were worthless...

Saw this tonight in the West End. Absolutely loved it. I’ve never seen the movie and thus have no comparison (thought I can see how it could feel too heavy for those who are familiar with the movie), but I thought just the acting alone was pretty tremendous. Especially Gillian Anderson, who is perhaps the most comfortable stage actor I’ve ever seen. Her every movement and breath feels remarkably lived in. The moment when she learns Eve did the read with Claudia and her entire spine steels at the news before breathing out a venomous “Eeeeeeve” was stunning. I also very much enjoyed Lily James, though the breadth of her performance didn’t entirely click for me until the revelation that she had been calculating the entire time. Monica Dolan as Karen also made a huge impact on me, not being familiar with her work prior. The whole evening was ALL about these incredible actresses.

This was perhaps the most straightforward of Van Hove’s productions I’ve seen. There were some clunky staging moments and some heavy-handed conceptual ideas (that ending... so predictable), but overall it felt like the things that should be highlighted by film were and the things meant to be taken in big picture were. I’m ready for him to move out of this film-theatre hybrid period, but if his future productions are this (mostly) seamlessly integrated, I would not be mad at it. But again, see it for the performances and go in with an open mind.

If i might ask, did you see it live on stage or the filmed live performance?...if seeing it live,  maybe that makes a better impression...the filmed live presentation i saw was the most stilted thing i have ever seen...

and to be a "Broadway Legend" here, and not having seen the movie, which is all about Broadway, seems to, sorry to say, be not possible...

I saw it live in London. Not sure what to say about why I enjoyed it and you didn’t other than... I just enjoyed it. I didn’t love *everything* about it and think it possibly could’ve been a little lighter on its feet overall, but “stilted” is definitely not what I saw on that stage. Thought Gillian Anderson and Monica Dolan were particularly excellent and Lily James very good. The men were less successful. Can’t speak to how it translates to a live broadcast (though I have tickets to see it next week in NY).

As for why I haven’t seen the film despite being a “Broadway Legend” (which means nothing other than I’ve been a consistent poster for 11 years), I couldn’t tell you. I didn’t grow up watching classic films and never developed a taste for sitting down and watching classic films. That said, I’m looking forward to watching it when I get home from my honeymoon now that I’ve purchased it on iTunes.

I really enjoyed it as well, I have no idea why so many people were so negative about it.

But then like you I also have not seen the film.

I do like Gillian as an actress, but did you see her in Streetcar? I thought her performance in that was a disaster from start to finish.

Streetcar is the only other time I’ve seen her onstage. Thought she - and that entire production, really - were a revelation.

Seriously. Apart from Billie Piper in Yerma it is one of the best performances I have seen and the production itself was phenomenal.
