Off the top of my head, I can't think of any small-scale filmed versions that weren't the stage production (Memphis, Shrek, Newsies, Allegiance, etc.) but again, I was picturing something lower budget that wouldn't require celebrities to draw in an audience. Also, the way it was announced, I think you'd be forgiven for assuming Ryan Murphy would keep the OBC. It was announced at a special charity performance he'd arranged, he specifically said "I was absolutely blown away by Casey's work and the incredible cast," and the article mentions the whole creative team is on board. It didn't sound like he'd bought the rights to turn The Prom into a movie. It sounded like he wanted people to see this specific version of the show.

About Nathan Lane ...

''the fact that he never appeared in a movie musical... is so sad.''

Well, Nathan did star in the 2005 film version of ''The Producers.''

And he and the movie got Golden Globe nominations.

The gay actor can bring their own personal truth to a role and provide a voice to a community that has been silenced for so long. The gay community is an oppressed minority that deserves to have their voices be heard."

But the opposite could also be said for a gay person playing a straight role. The gay actor cannot bring their personal truth to the character
"

Untrue.  Most gay people spend a part of their live pretending to be straight.  We have to learn how to navigate the straight world and present as straight (as best we can) in ways straight actors NEVER have to negotiate the gay world.  We grow up having to think about the straight world and our place in it.  We interact with the straight world daily from the time we're born.  The same is simply not true of straight actors.

Look...I do not advocate saying straight actors can't play gay roles.  But maybe they shouldn't until other avenues are exhausted.

This is relatively new (even for me).  I've been an out actor since the mid-90s.  There weren't many out actors then.  We've taken a pretty big step to go from hardly any out gay actors to quite a number.  That is fantastic progress.  But the next step in having come out is using our talent to tell our stories.  It's the next logical step and that's where we're going.  The idea that 'acting is just acting' has never really been all that true.  But now, we're starting to see people beginning to insist that we not only have the chance to be out and successful, but also to be a part of the storytelling of our histories.  Gay history has been ephemeral and mythic for so long (just look at all the supposition around the Stonewall uprising).  We are finally in a moment where we get to codify our history.  Some of that is through reportage.  Some of that is through our art.  We want the chance to shape our stories.  And that's a really great thing.

It will be interesting to see how this casting will play out in the movie. I guess the dynamic between Streep and Corden will be different than in the Broadway version with Leavel and Ashmanskas as Dee Dee and Barry - just based on their age difference alone.

Now that Ariana Grande will not be playing Alyssa, who do you think they will pick instead? Maybe Dove Cameron?

I’d really love if they use Caitlin and Izzy for Emma and Alyssa. They already have a star studded cast, give those roles to the originals from Broadway.

I don’t know if she can still play a high schooler, but a few years ago Keke Palmer would’ve been a great choice. She does have past work experience with Murphy...

Three adaptions out of how many the past 8-10 years? Pretty high percentage.

Don’t get me wrong, I think she’s an excellent actress. I just have not enjoyed her in her musicals. (Cue GeorgeandDot) Ryan Murphy To Develop Film Adaptation Of THE PROM For Netflix

Actually, it would be four if you count MARY POPPINS RETURNS

Five, if you count FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS

The other poster was talking about movies of the last 8-10 years, so "Postcards From The Edge" doesn't even come close. "A Prairie Home Companion" also falls out of the time frame. "Ricki and the Flash" is a more recent film with Meryl singing.

Do we really think Ariana Grande figured that the filming would coincide with her tour dates so that's how she pulled out of the production so quickly, or do you think the people involved expected backlash and that's how the casting changed so quickly?

Do we think Chaka Khan will play a part? Last night on Watch What Happens Live, Ariana Grande was brought up and Ms. Khan responded by saying something along the lines of “We’re going to work together. On that movie. What’s it called? Ooh I’m not supposed to talk about it yet.”

Actors being announced pre-maturely before contracts are signed or even negotiated happens all the time. I do think occasionally studios will do it as a ploy to test audience reaction to casting, but my guess in this instance Grande was announced before it was deemed that it wasn't ultimately possible with her schedule.

I desperately wish the original Broadway cast was being filmed because they are all so perfect in their roles. (Not surprising since the actors playing the Broadway veterans have been part of the show since its inception and the parts were written for them.)

At the first news of a movie (back in April), the only “star” casting rumor that I didn’t truly dislike was Jane Krakowski for Angie. I feel like someone floated the idea of Megan Mullally for Dee Dee, which could have been interesting.

I had seen an interview with the composer and lyricist where they talked about the ability to open up the world for the film so you could meet Emma’s grandmother and such. Maybe Glenn Close?

So, why is he using the same cast from The Boys in the Band but not for this?  Simply because the star power is already there for the play or because this is a musical which will generate more interest?

The Boys casting was based on the fact that the original Off-Broadway cast back in the day also were the cast for the movie, so he's sort of bookending that history by repeating it.

I desperately hope they cast a queer actor for Emma, even better if that someone is Caitlin Kinnunen. This cast desperately needs some LGBTQ+ representation and I'm sure Ryan Murphy is aware of that.

Maybe she is the only one involved that has read the script.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I didn't realize that using the original cast this time around would be repeating history. I simply thought that this revival had the star power to keep the cast intact for a film version.

I am glad he is keeping that cast intact as I was unable to see it on Broadway.
