An important distinction: Nathan'slast 3 Broadway shows all had famous costars(Andrew Garfield inAngels, and incredibly starry ensembles in TheFront Page andIt's Only A Play). He's the only name selling tickets inGary.
And, when NY theatregoers are choosing between plays, there are a LOT of other stars on Broadway this season. In the past 6 years, Lane has done 4 Broadway shows +Iceman Cometh at BAM.TheTitus Andronicussubtitlecould also be scaring people off."
If memory serves correct, Angels in America (which is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen) didn’thave great box office initially although it perked up part way into its run. It also never announced recoupment. Of course, the long running time and two parts probably kept some people away.
Curious...I just read that a new block of Kong tickets went on sale through 2020. I guess they have a lot of faith even with the bad reviews and such. Maybe no production wants it, or they're just staying open until The Music Man comes in?

Correct –– its numbers weren't great for the majority of the run. It averaged 68% gross potential, average ticket $102, and reportedly cost $7.5 million to mount.

To be honest, that really doesnt mean anything. Lots of shows have released tickets for MONTHS out, and then closed. The first one that comes to mind is Summer

Shows do this all the time, for no logical reason. Once On This Island did something similar last year. But you're right that the Shuberts may not have a big (BIG) musical tenant waiting in the wings.
After the Tony’s I wonder if Be More Chill has thought about replacing any of the cast members with teenage stars? (Who they could be, I don’t know. Do you?) I know that they have their cult following who might actually be upset if some of the original cast were replaced with Hollywood or television stars, but you know what? The cult following is not turning into ticket sales, so maybe something new is in order over at BMC?

The cast at Be More Chill is too loved by the fans and it would be chaos if any of them were replaced. Plus loyalty is a big thing for the producers and they wouldn't do it. Once they need a new cast I could see big names coming on board but I don't think the show will last that long.
