Feature: The Best Theatre for Valentine's Day in Albuquerque

If you're looking for something to do on or around Valentine's Day in and around Albuquerque , look no further! These shows will not disappoint. From Los Lunas to Albuquerque, there are several productions that would be a wonderful way to spend an evening or two.

Albuquerque will have several plays and musicals that would be perfect to take a loved one to on (or right after) Valentine's Day. Popejoy Hall will have performances of the much-loved musical RENT from February 15th- February 17th. Jonathan Larson's rock musical follows the lives of a group of friends trying to survive in the East Village of New York in the 1990's, amid the AIDS crisis. Shows are Friday at 7:30 PM, Saturday at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and Sunday at 1:00 PM. Tickets start at $48, and can be purchased at the UNM box office.

On February 13th at 7:30 pm, Popejoy Presents will have a one night only performance of Sleeping Beauty at UNM's Popejoy Hall. Featuring a score by Tchaikovsky, and choreography by Marius Petipa, the ballet captures the spirit of the classic fairytale. Tickets range from $25 - $79 and can be purchased at the UNM Box Office.

The National Hispanic Cultural Center presents The Real James Bond...Was Dominican from February 14th- February 17that the Wells Fargo Auditorium. The play explores what happens when a Dominican boy in Queens who is obsessed with James Bond learns that the real-life inspiration for the character was based on a Dominican man, Porfirio Rubirosa. This play is a described as a young man's guide to love, sex, color, white-washing, success, and the journey to find one's true self. Performances are 7:30 PM Thursday - Saturday and 2:00 PM Sunday. From February 7th- February 16th, Blackout Theatre presents Cheap Date. This sketch show does its best to explore every possible dating scenario from romance beyond the grave to the perfect "meet cute". The performances are Thursday - Saturday at 8:00 PM at the Coal Avenue Theatre. Tickets range from $5-$8 and can be purchased at http://www.blackouttheatre.com.

Starting February 2nd and running until May 11th, with performances on each Saturday night, Foul Play Café, New Mexico's premier murder mystery dinner theatre, presents The Sound of Murderat the Sheraton Albuquerque Uptown. This show by Tim Hasse is set in the 1940's at WMDR!'s radio station. It's one hour before they are going live, and if the show doesn't go well the station will be out of business. Complicating things are the station owner's son trying to sabotauge the show and an actual murder taking place! Admission will include a four-course meal, laughs, actor improvisation, and audience participation. The doors open at 7:00 PM and the show starts promptly at 7:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased at Brown Paper Tickets and range from $29.99 for Youth (12 and under) to $52.99 for adults. There are shows on February 14thand 16th.

The Vortex Theatre has a production of Lysistrata: A Woman's Translation by Drue Robinson, adapted from the play by Aristophanes. Lysteria: A Woman's Translation centers on the Peloponnesian War fought by the Delian League of Athens against the Peloponnesian League of Sparta. Lysteria, the wife of a military leader, decides the women of Athens and Sparta should withhold conjugal relations until the men agree to negotiations, with hilarious repercussions.

The play is for mature audiences and contains partial nudity, sexual humor, and adult language. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:00 PM. Tickets range from $17- $24.

Las Cruces Community Theatre (LCCT) is performing Arthur Miller's The Crucible, from February 1st- February 16th. Directed by Norman Lewis and staring LCCT alum Darin Cabot as John Proctor and Nora Brown as Elizabeth Proctor, The Crucible takes a look at the Salem Witch Trials and how they affected the community. The production revolves around the relationship between truth and lies, as well as how a community's fear can affect them both. Tickets are $15.00. For more information call : 575-523-1200.

Los Lunas Commuty Theatre will have a production of A.R. Gurney's Love Lettersat Mansion Players on February 15thand February 16th. This play, presented by Bob and Sandra Hakman, is a touching story of two people who grew up together then went their separate ways. During this time they communicate to one another through a series of letters, sharing their lives with one another despite their distance. This is a performance that has dinner as well as a show, and tickets are $27 for both.

Aux Dog Theatre will have a production of Three Tall Womenfrom February 8th- March 10th. Edward Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning play is about Albee's real-life adoptive mother and their relationship. Aux Dog's production is headed by director Fredrick Ponzlov and stars Lacey Bingham, Laura Normam, Tilcara Webb, and Juan Mendoza Solis. Tickets range from $12 - $20.

The Hobb's Community Players will perform Character Linesfrom February 15th- February 24thwith performances on Thursdays - Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm. This play by Doris Baizley explores the life of Dot, a Los Angeles housewife whose neighbor and friend has entered her in a mid-1950's televised "homemaking contest". The play is a commentary on how advertising and media has made women question their intelligence and worth, as well as what happens when someone tries to be the ideal woman.
