Citizens Theatre Takes Stripped Down Scottish Play On Tour

The Citizens Theatre has released details of a Scotland-wide tour of The Macbeths: an intimate and stripped down version of Shakespeare's epic tale of hubris, betrayal and destructive partnership.

The play's run at the Citizens Theatre in October 2017 sold-out and was described by the Scotsman as, "...a rich evening of theatre for anyone who loves Macbeth, and also loves to see it reborn, in ever more challenging forms."

The Macbeths will tour to Dundee Rep (Wed 3 -Thu 4 Oct) MacArts Theatre, Galashiels (Fri 5 Oct) Paisley Arts Centre (Sat 6 Oct) The Byre Theatre, St Andrews (Tue 9 - Thu 11 Oct) MacRobert, Stirling (Fri 12 Oct) Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh (16 Oct - 20 Oct - excluding Fri 19) Eden Court, Inverness (Tue 23 Oct) Pitlochry Festival Theatre (Thu 25 Oct) and Beacon Arts Centre, Greenock (Sat 27 Oct).

Directed by Citizens Theatre Artistic Director Dominic Hill and adapted in collaboration with dramaturg Frances Poet, this hour-long re-telling, with its relentless focus on the marriage at the heart of the Scottish play offers, in the words of The Daily Record, "...a thrilling and visceral new way into one of Shakespeare's most familiar plays."

The success of the 2017 production was recently underlined when Charlene Boyd, who played Lady Macbeth in last year's production, was nominated for a Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland, in the Best Female Performance category.
