Review: SOAP, Underbelly Festival Southbank

The clue for what this play entails lies within the title. You're probably going to get wet, but don't worry there are plastic sheets available to protect any valuable items in your possession. And if you're in the front row, then you'll be absolutely soaked. But that is where I'd encourage everyone to sit, as it'll allow them to see every wonderful act in its close-up beauty.

Headlining the Underbelly Festival Southbank, German circus group SOAP arrive in London like an unfamiliar torrential wave, putting on a show that is sexy, absurd and at times rather particularly moving. One thing's for sure, bath time will never be the same again as the company demonstrate all the unique things that can be done inside and around a tub.

The soundscape mixes together an electronic and operatic soundtrack, ranging from Goldfrapp, Sia, Mozart, Gnarls Barkley and much more. Jennifer Lindshield, whose voice is nothing short of spectacular, performs some of it live as we watch the other acrobatic action unfold around us.

Performed in the round you feel fully immersed with everything. The performers take their time to ensure they connect with every person, before returning to their impressive stunts. There's trapeze, juggling, contortion and even a bit of clowning. It's completely over the top, definitely bonkers and so much fun.

Every person needs a night out like this: one where they can sit back and watch the impossible happen. I've seen a lot of circus in my time, but this feels totally unique to everything else that's out there. SOAP have really taken care in creating a style of work that no one else is doing right now.

And this is part of why the event promises lots of laughter and total bewilderment. Performed by a seriously crazy and multi-talented ensemble, this company now have a life-long fan.
