MAC To Produce Groundbreaking NEXT TO NORMAL

The Monongalia Arts Center (MAC) has announced production of the critically acclaimed 2010 Pulitzer Prize and 2009 Tony-winning musical Next to Normal. Described as "an unflinching look at a suburban family struggling with the effects of mental illness," this will be the very first production anywhere in the area. Performances are scheduled for November 1-3 and 8-10 at 8:00 pm and November 4 at 2 pm.

The story centers around a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effects that her illness and its management have had on her family. The musical also addresses the issues of grief, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry, and the underbelly of suburban life. Though perhaps not the obvious subject matter for a musical, it includes a driving, soaring, and heartwrenching score.

"The MAC prides itself on providing quality and cutting-edge programming to the community," stated Ro Brooks, MAC Executive Director, "and we are thrilled to be bringing this unique and moving show to life in the Tanner Theater. We believe promoting increased understanding of Mental Health and Substance Abuse issues is an important public service, and this show frames those issues in the context of an average American family."

"What occurs behind the closed doors of a seemingly average home may pale in comparison to what occurs behind the closed doors of a troubled mind," stated Director Kevin Dean. "On behalf of the entire cast, if you leave this performance with a renewed sense of empathy for others, no matter their plight, then we will have done our jobs."

Tickets are now available for this performance. Admission is $15. Tickets may be purchased at the MAC Lobby Desk, by phone (304-292-3325), and online at www.monartscenter.com/shop.

MAC is located at 107 High Street, Morgantown, WV. Inquiries should be directed to info@monartscenter.com or 304-292-3325. Next to Normal is not appropriate for young audiences.
