The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra kicks off their 2018/2019 season with a family friendly night of musical favorites from The Beach Boys' diverse musical catalogue. Surf's Up! A Tribute to The Beach Boys will take place on Friday, September 21st, 2018 at 7:30 PM at the Capitol Theater in Wheeling, WV.

Conducted by Music Director Finalist Timothy Hankewich and featuring guest artist Phil Dirt and the Dozers, attendees can expect a night full of sing-alongs featuring many of The Beach Boys greatest hits, including God Only Knows, Help me Rhonda, California Girls and Surfin' USA.

This is the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra's 89th Season and they intend to begin with a concert sure to captivate both children and adults. The symphony orchestra will accompany Phil Dirt and the Dozers as they perform these beloved classics, adding a layer of richness to the music. The band formed in 1981 and have since garnered a following throughout the US due to their keen musicianship, lively performances and quality productions and have regularly been featured on local and national television. Members include Steve Cabot on vocals, Mark Frye handling Keyboard, saxophone, flute and bass while also providing vocals, Tony Alfano on guitar and vocals, Hadden Sayers on guitar and Chris Guthrie on drums.

Timothy Hankewich, a Muisc Director Finalist, will serve as Maestro. Hankewich is currently the Music Director for Orchestra Iowa, based out of Cedar Rapid, Iowa and graduated from the University of Alberta, in British Columbia, with both a bachelor's and Master of Music. Afterwards, Hankewich received a Doctorate in instrumental and opera conducting from Indiana University. During his studies he worked under Maestros Bruno Weill and David Zinman while also performing in Victoria as a pianist and Vienna and Aspen as a conductor.

Hankewich shows his enthusiasm when asked about Surf's Up! "We get to escape to the beach one more time before the end of Summer, as the Wheeling Symphony will hang 10 with Phil Dirt and the Dozers performing all of the great hits of The Beach Boys," said Hankewich. "I love this show because it reminds me of the music I listened to growing up. It's the perfect soundtrack for beach bums and sun-worshippers."

Hankewich took time to compliment the band, "Phil and his band faithfully re-create all the sunny hits as recorded by The Beach Boys, now with the added benefit of having a full symphony orchestra behind them joining in all the fun, fun, fun." Those attending will not be disappointed, assures Hankewich. "It will make for an evening of good vibrations. Can't wait to see you there."

Party in the Alley, a preconcert event with tickets available to concert goers, will be catered by Sarah Lydick from Sarah's on Main and will begin at 6:00 PM. The event will feature food, beer and wine, providing the perfect start to the evening. Taking place in the alley adjacent to the Capitol Theater, this is one party you do not want to miss.
