Tampa Repertory Theatre will present Michael Frayn's Tony award-winning drama Copenhagen January 4-20, 2019 (with a paid preview performance on January 3) on the USF campus in Studio 120, 3837 USF Holly Drive, Tampa. Performances are at 8 PM on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and at 3 PM on Sundays. Tickets are $25 ($20 student/military/senior). Patrons may purchase tickets at the door or from TampaRep's website at http://www.tamparep.org/copenhagen.

Inspired by an actual 1941 encounter in Copenhagen between Niels Bohr and his former pupil Werner Heisenberg, Copenhagen brings together the ghosts of the two physicists with that of Bohr's wife Margrethe to plumb the deceptively byzantine question, "Why did Heisenberg come to Copenhagen?"

In his review of the hit 2000 Broadway production, New York Times theatre critic Ben Brantley described the play's "endlessly fascinating" debate as "a wide-ranging, intensely emotional consideration of everything from quantum mechanics to the loss of a child, to the fate of the world in the atomic age, to the ways that friendships go sour; from the theories of complementarity and uncertainty to the eternal ambiguity of human motives and memory." The Broadway production took home Tony awards for Best Play, Best Featured Actress in a Play and Best Direction of a Play.

TampaRep's production is directed by Emilia Sargent, TampaRep co-founder and star of the company's recent hit Heisenberg. Sargent was honored as "Outstanding Lead Actress" by Theatre Tampa Bay and as "Best Actress" by Creative Loafing for her turn in last season's Grounded. She previously directed TampaRep's revival of Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour.

Sargent has assembled a crack cast of veterans for Copenhagen, starting with TampaRep newcomer Christopher Marshall (appearances at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Utah Shakespeare Festival and many others) as Heisenberg. Ned Averill-Snell (2018 Creative Loafing "Best Actor in an American Classic" for TampaRep's A View from the Bridge) will play Bohr, and Ami Sallee (TampaRep's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Creative Loafing "Best Actress" for Jobsite Theater's The Last Night of Ballyhoo) will appear as Margrethe.

The middle play in TampaRep's 8th season, Copenhagen comes on the heels of the successful September run of Simon Stephens' Heisenberg, and will be followed by the raucous and irreverent comedy Stupid f-ing Bird, Aaron Posner's satirical spin on Anton Chekhov's classic The Seagull, opening in May. [EDITORS: Publisher approves the use of substitute title Stupid F**king Bird.]
