Sydney Philharmonia Choirs Presents An Intimate Evening With Brahms, With Special Guest Conductor Simon Halsey

Sydney Philharmonia Choirs' 2019 season begins with An Intimate Evening with Brahms, an unmissable concert program conducted by special guest, internationally acclaimed chorus master, Simon Halsey.

This stunning presentation, stripped back to voice and piano, pays tribute to Brahms' legacy, opening with a short program of solo songs and duets, ahead of a full choral performance of Brahms' acclaimed and deeply personal Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem).

Recognised as one of the world's most beautiful choral works and the composition that brought Brahms to the world's attention, A German Requiem was ensured widespread appreciation when Brahms' publisher insisted that he make an arrangement for piano duet, bringing all the vocal and orchestral parts together in a version that four hands could play at home, on one instrument.

This arrangement, first heard in a private home on Wimpole St, London in 1871, forms the basis of Sydney Philharmonia's performance: shining a light on the power of the human voice, as guest soprano, baritone and the 120 members of Sydney Philharmonia's renowned Symphony Chorus take to centre stage, in the gleaming surrounds of Sydney's City Recital Hall.

Sure to be a highlight of the Sydney Symphony season, An Intimate Evening with Brahms sees Simon Halsey's first Sydney presentation since the 2000 Olympics, in which he brings his expertise to showcasing Sydney Philharmonia's virtuoso Symphony Chorus.

"Simon Halsey could walk into any choir in the world and transform them - such is his knowledge, technique and charisma. His knowledge of Brahms' requiem is unsurpassed, and I have no doubt that his involvement will bring the Symphony Chorus to new levels of brilliance," comments Brett Weymark.

"Added to this, we are thrilled to be joined by two of Australia's most talented soloists, Emma Pearson and Sam Roberts-Smith, for what promises to be an incredibly moving evening of music, presented in chamber style," he concludes.

Book now for this one-off concert performance, 7pm Friday February 8, City Recital Hall, Sydney, sydneyphilharmonia.com.au/. Tickets from $39.
