ROMULUS THE GREAT Comes To Theater Basel Through 5/29 ROMULUS THE GREAT, a play written by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, is running until May 29 at Theater Basel. The show originally ran in Switzerland in 1949.

ROMULUS THE GREAT tells the story of the Swiss version of a Roman tyrant and the presumed alter ego of his creator Dürrenmatt - who wishes above all else to avoid being a tyrant. Meanwhile Rome is in a state of panic: the Teutons are closing in, though all Romulus is interested in is how many eggs his chickens are laying. He breaks the last golden leaves off his laurel wreath in order to pay the cook and stoically withstands the attempts by his family and ministers to prevent the fall of the West.

This production of the show is recommended for audiences 12 years and older.
