On Monday, April 9, Broadway stars Karen Mason and Brent Barrett thrilled a packed house with an evening of Kander & Ebb showstoppers at Birdland! The concert, titled 'Sing Happy,' was a celebration of all things K&E, and included some of the writing duo's most famous anthems ('New York, New York' and 'Maybe This Time') as well as a few lesser-known pieces ('Life Is' from Zorba and 'Skin of Your Teeth' from Over and Over).

As BroadwayWorld reported yesterday, legendary theater writer Joseph Stein passed away yesterday, October 24, 2010 at the age of 98 according to those who have recently worked with him. Stein leaves behind the musicals Fiddler on the Roof, Zorba, and Mr. Wonderful, to name a few.
Featuring one of the last scores by the lengendary Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Kander and Ebb (CHICAGO, CABARET, ZORBA) and a book by multiple Tony Award-winner Rupert Holmes (DROOD; SAY GOODNIGHT, GRACIE), CURTAINS is set backstage in 1959 at Boston's Colonial Theatre during the pre-Broadway tryout of a new musical. When the hapless leading lady is murdered on opening night during the curtain call, Lt. Frank Cioffi is called in to investigate and the entire company and creative team become suspects. But the lure of the theater proves irresistible and after an unexpected romance blooms for the stage-struck detective, he finds himself just as drawn toward making the show a hit as he is in solving the murder. THE BILBAO EFFECT, a world-premiere play that puts contemporary architecture on trial, written by Oren Safdie (whose previous play about architecture, PRIVATE JOKES, PUBLIC PLACES, was a hit Off-Broadway in 2003) will be presented Off-Broadway with an official press opening night on May 16, 2010 at Center for Architecture (536 LaGuardia Place) in Manhattan.
