At the start of IN THE HEIGHTS, now in its locally produced premiere at Beck Center, Usnavi chases away Graffiti Pete, a graffiti artist, from in front of his Washington Heights 'bodega' (Spanish for a small neighbor grocery store). As the young owner raps, the lyrics and music set the mood for what is a three-day visit to the largely Hispanic/Latino neighborhood on the brink of change. It's a place where families bond, neighborhood ties are strong, and the George Washington Bridge casts its shadow across the hopes and dreams of the residents.

The Public Theater just presented a special 40th anniversary tribute to A CHORUS LINE last night, April 16 in honor of the first performance of this legendary musical that premiered in The Public's Newman Theater 40 years ago and went on to make musical theater history. To commemorate this landmark event, the cast of the critically-acclaimed musical HAMILTON, currently playing on the same Newman stage, presented original cast members of A CHORUS LINE with a plaque that will hang in the Ford Foundation Lobby of The Public. This season's line-up includes the World Premiere of Howard Barker's Gary the Thief and the NY Premiere of Howard Barker's Plevna: Meditations on Hatred, both directed by PTP's Co-Artistic Director Richard Romagnoli (American Associate of The Wrestling School), the NY Premiere of Snoo Wilson's Lovesong of the Electric Bear, directed by PTP's Co-Artistic Director Cheryl Faraone, and a revival of David Rabe's A Question Of Mercy, based on the Journal by Richard Selzer, directed by PTP's Co-Artistic Director Jim Petosa.
