To celebrate, we're looking back at the opening night of Broadway's most recent revival in 2008 starring Patti LuPone in the iconic role of Mama Rose. Arthur Laurents was best known for his work as librettist on Gypsy and West Side Story, but was also well known as a playwright, having won a Tony Award® for Hallelujah, Baby! in 1968. Later as a director, he was Tony-nominated for Gypsy in 1975 (and the 2008 revival) as well as the original 1984 La Cage Aux Folles.

Today in 2008, the fourth Broadway revival of Gypsy opened at the St. James Theatre, where it ran for 332 performances. Gypsy is a musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents. It follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise two daughters to perform onstage and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life. The musical contains many songs that became popular standards, including 'Small World,' 'Everything's Coming up Roses', 'Some People', 'Let Me Entertain You', and 'Rose's Turn'.

The 2011 Tony Award nominees were announced live from the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in New York City on Tuesday, May 3, 2011. The next day, proud nominees gathered at the Millenium Hotel in Times Square to celebrate and meet the press. Broadway Beat was on hand, of course, to speak with all of the proud nominees. On Thursday August 28th Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Triangle hosted Tony and Olivier Award-winning Patti LuPone, four-time Tony Award-winner Boyd Gaines and Tony Award-winner Laura Benanti for a Q&A and a CD signing with additional members of the Gypsy cast. The event was a celebration of the August 26th release of the Gypsy cast recording from Time Life. BWW TV brings you there for all the 'swell' and 'great' fun!

The New Broadway Cast Recording of Gypsy will be released on Tuesday August 26th, 2008. The recording session took place at Manhattan's Clinton Recording Studios and BroadwayWorld TV was there to capture all the excitement as the historic event took place.
