In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the Wednesday, October 31st performances of the Broadway productions of Mary Poppins and The Lion King have been cancelled. (There was no performance of Newsies scheduled).

The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation will be holding their inaugural Global Champions of a Mother's Fight Gala Awards Luncheon at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in NY today, October 29th 2012. The event will honor longtime leaders in the fight to end pediatric AIDS, and will be presented by Arianna Huffington, who will serve as the Master of Ceremonies, leading a thought provoking panel with the event's three honorees, Alex Gorsky, CEO of Johnson & Johnson, Amy Robbins, founder of the Nduna Foundation, and Cookie Johnson, Magic Johnson's wife and board member of the Magic Johnson Foundation.

Last fall, Theatre Development Fund (TDF) piloted the new program, Autism Theatre Initiative, as part of TDF's Accessibility Programs (TAP), to make theatre accessible to children and adults on the autism spectrum, and their families. They presented the first-ever autism-friendly performance of a Broadway show at Disney's landmark The Lion King on October 2, 2011 and followed that up with an autism-friendly performance of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins on April 29, 2012. On September 30, the cast of The Lion King took part in another autism-friendly performance, and Rod Thomas, an actor in the show, wrote about the experience from his perspective. Disney Theatrical Productions and Gexa Energy Broadway at the Hobby Center previously announced the long-awaited return engagement of Disney's THE LION KING to Houston. The show leaps onto the Hobby Center stage tonight, July 10 for a limited engagement of five weeks through Sunday, August 12. THE LION KING's sold-out eight-week Houston premiere engagement in 2002 at Jones Hall was followed by a sold-out six-week return engagement in 2006 at the Hobby Center.

For over nine months, the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) has worked with Disney Theatrical Group to develop adaptations of Disney's musical The Lion King for young performers. Aubrey Lynch is an original cast member and former associate producer of the Broadway production, and he has been overseeing HAS's workshop presentations of Disney Theatrical Group's newest in-development musical for young people. This process has become a vehicle for HSA to further its mission and develop a fifth discipline, musical theatre.

TDF's Autism Theater Initiative presents autism-friendly performances of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Mary Poppins today, April 29, at 1pm, at the New Amsterdam Theatre (214 West 42nd, Street, NYC) and Disney's The Lion King on Sunday, September 30, at 1pm, at the Minskoff Theatre (1515 Broadway, NYC). These performances illustrate TDF's commitment to continuing to present autism-friendly performances in New York City. TDF is also available to consult with other theatre organizations across the United States who would like to present their own autism-friendly performances.
