A Life - 2019 - Off-Broadway History , Info & More

Public Theater [Newman Theater]
425 Lafayette Street New York, NY 10003

Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Tony Award nominee Tom Sturridge make their Public Theater debut in an unforgettable and incredibly intimate evening of theater.

Sturridge, in his third collaboration with Tony and Olivier Award winner Simon Stephens (Heisenberg, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), performs SEA WALL, an astonishing monologue about love and the human need to know the unknowable.

Gyllenhaal continues his artistic collaboration with Olivier Award-nominated playwright Nick Payne (Constellations, If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet) in A LIFE, a meditation on how we say goodbye to those we love most.

Directed by Carrie Cracknell (A Doll’s House, The Deep Blue Sea), this heart-filled exploration of the beauty of life and meaning of love, SEA WALL / A LIFE is a must-see evening of dramatic storytelling at its best.

by Joshua Wright - Jan 25, 2024

Humans 2.0 by Circa is created by Yaron Lifschitz and the Circa Ensemble. Humans 2.0 is a seriously sensational spectacle: as aesthetic as it is athletic, as comedic as it is grave, and all in all, a visceral delight.

PRINSIPE BAHAGHARI is Ripe with Life's Foremost Lessons
by Oliver Oliveros - Jan 25, 2024

The 1943 children’s novel by French writer poet Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, 'The Little Prince,' is a classic literary piece meant for adults. Instead of children-friendly explorations of friendship, love, and fantasy, it blows heavier with darker themes of loneliness, obsession, and loss.

Review: NORTHANGER ABBEY, Orange Tree Theatre
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Jan 25, 2024

It's no wonder that the Orange Tree Theatre is such a fan of Zoe Cooper. She received critical acclaim with both the beautifully touching Jess And Joe Forever in 2016 and the wonderfully perceptive Out Of Water in 2019 at the venue. There are many similaries here, with Cooper's deft handling of sexuality, friendship and social expectations, but this time taken from Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Is it another hit? Not quite.

Jimmy Buffett Collaborator Will Kimbrough to Release New Album 'For the Life of Me'
by Michael Major - Jan 22, 2024

Folkies, even the ones with a good dose of country in their sound, tend to create quiet, introspective songs that are designed to pack a subtle but no less potent punch. Revered, multi-talented folk-Americana artist Will Kimbrough doesn't quite fit that mold, and it is most evident on the 11 tracks that comprise For the Life of Me.

by The Marriage Matinee - Jan 23, 2024

As it finds new life as a play, we had the privilege of speaking with Justin Mark who plays Jem in the current touring production. He gave us insight into his process and the ways this story still resonates with a modern audience.

Review: In THE BOOK OF GRACE from Rapid Lemon, a Penchant for Grand Themes and Intoxicating Characters, Outstanding Cast
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jan 15, 2024

Playwright Suzan Lori-Parks evidently likes to swing for the fences. In The Book of Grace, now being presented by Rapid Lemon, he is fearless in presenting an extravagantly exaggerated and often violent version of the realities she sees in our country today. Despair seems the only reasonable response – and yet optimism, however irrational, cannot be absolutely extinguished. Parks exhibits an extravagant talent and a penchant for grand themes – and a pervasive if not totally dominant skepticism.
