Pacino to Star in MERCHANT OF VENICE; Ferguson, Martin, Rabe, Santiago-Hudson & Wright Join Shakespeare in Park Rep

The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson) announced early casting for the 2010 Shakespeare in the Park summer season. Daniel Sullivan will direct THE MERCHANT OF VENICE in rotating rep with THE WINTER'S TALE, directed by Michael Greif. The repertory company will feature Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Solanio/Young Shepherd); Jesse L. Martin (Gratiano/Polixenes); Al Pacino (Shylock); Lily Rabe (Portia/First Gentlewoman); Ruben Santiago-Hudson as (Prince of Morocco/Leontes); and Max Wright (Old Gobbo/Old Shepherd).

The Public Theater (Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson) announced that the 2010 Shakespeare in the Park summer season will present two Shakespeare plays in repertory giving audiences eight straight weeks of free Shakespeare. Under directors Daniel Sullivan and Michael Greif, the same company of actors will perform in both THE WINTER'S TALE and THE MERCHANT OF VENICE on rotating nights.

St. Louis Shakespeare celebrates its 25th year presenting the finest classical theatre. The Company's 2009 season opens in July with THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, followed in August by TWELFTH NIGHT and MACBETH in October, at the Grandel Theatre in the Grand Center Arts District. In November, SLS returns with an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND, presented at the Missouri History Museum as part of their Performing Arts Series.

When a charming stranger appears at psychologist Maude's remote house in the LA hills one night, an innocent encounter soon becomes a sexually charged battle of wits. Al Weaver was cast as Hamlet in Trevor Nunn's Old Vic production in 2004 and appeared in the lead role in the National Theatre's Coram Boy. His film credits include Colour Me Kubrick, and The Merchant of Venice. Alice Krige is known to millions for her role as the Borg Queen in the film, Star Trek: First Contact. She received an Olivier Award for Most Promising Newcomer for her debut play Arms and the Man.

Robert Portal makes a welcome return to the role of Richard Hannay in Patrick Barlow's adaptation of The 39 Steps, directed by Maria Aitken, currently in its third year at the Criterion Theatre. On Monday 2 February he joined the current cast members Tessa Churchard, Alan Perrin and Nigel Betts in this hilarious 100 minute whodunnit. Robert Portal first played Hannay from April to October 2007. Since that time the production has enjoyed incredible UK and international success and he returns to a role which is currently played by 14 actors in as many countries across the world.
