On February 17th, the Newnan Community Theatre Company celebrates the 100th anniversary of Tennessee Williams' birth by presenting Williams' classic memory play The Glass Menagerie. This haunting family drama takes place at a particular time in American history, in 1938 right before World War II, just as the country was coming out of the Great Depression. While the setting controls their circumstances, the traits, conflicts and relationships of the characters are beyond time and place. They are people we will all recognize, and perhaps come away with a deeper understanding of the family members who have made us what we are - for better or worse.

Based on the Jan De Hartog play, The Fourposter, the story spans fifty years, from 1895 to 1945, as it focuses on the trials and tribulations, laughters and sorrows, and hopes and disappointments experienced by Agnes and Michael Snow throughout their marriage. I DO! I DO! is a remarkably intimate, romantic piece. We are invited into the bedroom of newlyweds Michael & Agnes who anticipate a wonderful blissful life…'Together Forever' as one of the early musical selections would have us believe. As we all know, reality sets in as the young couple struggle to maintain their happiness, passion, devotion and yes even a sense of humor, through all the joys, pains, trials and tribulations that they share in their 50 years of marriage.

Ernest Borgnine, who is exuberantly entering his seventh decade of creating memorable characters and award-winning performances, will receive Screen Actors Guild (SAG)'s most prestigious accolade-?the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment.

Tennessee Williams is one of the best-known American playwrights of the 20th Century, and in this centennial year of his birth, it seems fitting to bring you one of his most complex pieces of work. Over the years on Roundabout's stages, you have seen everything from Williams' early classics like A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie to the less-frequently-staged Suddenly Last Summer and The Night of the Iguana. Through these productions, you've had an opportunity to truly get to know this complicated playwright, which I think makes you the ideal audience for Milk Train, a thorny, rarely-produced Williams gem. Michael Wilson, this production's director, spent ten years bringing the plays of Williams to his audience at Hartford Stage Company, knowing that Williams is a playwright to be savored, one who evolved a great deal throughout his career. Although he would continue to tackle certain themes and characters, much changed in Williams' life, and in the world, between his first success with The Glass Menagerie in 1945 and the first production of Milk Train eighteen years later. Knowing his work so well now, I think you are ready to embrace a play from that later, more multifaceted period.

Inc. has announced additional casting for its special exploratory reading of the 1947 musical comedy Barefoot Boy With Cheek on January 14 at 3pm at Manhattan Theatre Club's Creative Center, 311 West 43rd Street. The reading will launch a new UMC initiative, The Archival Project, aimed at researching, assembling and restoring unpublished and out-of-print musical shows.
