Heart Bones to Releases Debut Album HOT DISH
by Kaitlin Milligan - Jan 30, 2020

Heart Bones is a rare thing—a new band with a long history—which heightens both expectations and standards. See, I think that when a new thing, a creative thing, clicks into place just right and does so immediately on a level that you just know and feel is true all at once, often it's all the little ways it dares to be just a little bit off that actually makes it work. And striking this ideal ratio of The Familiar and The New is the specialist's true skill. This is exactly how Heart Bones excels.

BWW Interview: Getting a Kick from Keckler at Opera Philadelphia's O19 Festival
by Richard Sasanow - Sep 18, 2019

Last January, Joseph Keckler seemed to burst forth, fully blown, like Athena from the head of Zeus, at New York's Prototype Festival (though his emergence was, in fact, no such thing, having already been a staple of the Downtown scene for several years). This month, Philadelphia's got him, at the Opera Philadelphia O19, running from September 20-28, with LET ME DIE. It's a genre-bending performance piece for the baritone, whose voice ascends to tenorial heights, that peppers famous operatic death scenes (with some singing collaborators) with video from Lianne Arnold, his own music and signature comedic je ne sais quoi.

American Authors Release New Album SEASONS
by Tori Hartshorn - Mar 4, 2019

Each seasonal cycle informs, impacts, and inspires growth. American Authors translate those cycles of change into genre-blurring alternative anthems, bordering pop ambition and rock spirit undercut by a rhythmic hip-hop boom. Touting airtight songcraft and sonic adventurousness, the Brooklyn-based four-piece—Zac Barnett [vocals], James Adam Shelley [guitar, banjo], Dave Rublin [bass], and Matt Sanchez [drums]—push forward and progress yet again on their 2018 third full-length, the aptly titled Seasons [Island Records].

BWW Review: Time stands still in this passionate and evocative work “These Shining Lives” at Powerstories Theatre in Tampa, FL
by Drew Eberhard - Feb 10, 2019

A Blank stage is set to adorn a combination of a house on one side and what will soon become the work stations of the women in this production. On the projection behind the set were words written to strike a chord with incoming audience members, "If one woman were to tell the truth about her life, the world would split open." These wise words from Muriel Rukyster were the only thing standing between the audience and the works to be portrayed on the stage this night. In the program, Founder and Director Fran Powers wrote, "Directing These Shining Lives has been a project of the heart. "It is vitally important to keep honoring courageous women who sacrificed so much for others." This is the foundation of the Powerstories Theatre mission."With that the scene is set and a whirlwind 90 minutes set to no intermission was about to unfold in front of us.

Craft Recordings To Release COLTRANE '58: THE PRESTIGE RECORDINGS Box Set 3/29
by Tori Hartshorn - Jan 29, 2019

Though it's been 52 years since his tragic passing, John Coltrane's importance and influence have never been greater. Though active for a relatively short period—from 1957 to '67—he was an intrepid spirit who developed at a feverish pace. Coltrane's breakout year, when his mature sound first grabbed ears and his own recordings began to sell consistently, was 1958. Coltrane '58: The Prestige Recordings, out March 29th on Craft Recordings, is a box set (8-LP, 5-CD & digital formats) that chronicles the exciting story session by session, featuring all 37 tracks Coltrane recorded as a leader or co-leader for the independent Prestige label in those twelve months. This collection captures him in creative high gear—developing the signature improvisational style that journalist Ira Gitler famously dubbed “sheets of sound.”

Compulsions, Secrets, and Ecstatic Polyphony: FUN HOME at Center Stage

A major work of art, in a quintessentially American genre, an important representation of an under-represented group that advances understanding and dialogue, and beautifully produced. Audiences should embrace this production.
