Based on the best-selling novel, this show captures the lyrical expanse of America's heartland. Winner of the 2014 Tony Award for Best Score and Orchestrations, this sweeping romance about the roads we travel, the doors we open, and the bridges we dare to cross will leave audiences breathless.

"There are songs that come free from the blue-eyed grass, from the dust of a thousand country roads. And so begins a story you will never forget"

Before The Bridges of Madison County landed on Broadway in 2014, and before its 1995 run as a movie starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep, the love story was a book penned in two weeks by an unlikely first-time Iowa novelist, college business professor Robert James Waller. Through each beloved incarnation the tale has garnered widespread accolades. The book was on the New York Times Bestseller list for about three years. It sold more than 12 million copies and has been translated into more than 40 languages.

What lies before us is a relatively open space, a vast expanse of possibilities. A road that leads under the untouched beauty of Iowa Sky, along endless miles of yellow cornfields. There are right and left turns, there are doors you choose to open and sometimes there is a bridge you dare to cross. And then all of a sudden, a single chance encounter can cause you to pause, take a deep breath, look around and connect to yourself once again. Its that moment we all have when we think about the other path. What about that love that I turned away from? What about that decision I had to make between schools? How did that alter the path I have been on?

This show celebrates the staggeringly high price and even greater value of the commitments and the choices we make to build a home. If you really think about it, we love in many different ways, and we can love different things simultaneously. Here in the United States, we have generally one word and description for love, but if you travel abroad and learn other languages, other cultures have many words and descriptions for love.

"In a universe of ambiguity, this kind of certainty comes only once, and never again, no matter how many lifetimes you live" -J.Scott Lapp, Director

The Bridges of Madison County runs May 11-June 3 in the Russell Hill Rogers Theater. For tickets and more information, visit our website at thepublicsa.org.
