Review: THE SOUND OF MUSIC on Tour

THE SOUND OF MUSIC is among one of the world's greatest musicals ever. The musical score by Rogers and Hammerstein is amazing and has proven to be one of the greatest musicals. Most would picture Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain Georg von Trapp. But, as the show opened up at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, many will agree that the current tour of THE SOUND OF MUSIC is on the same caliber as the original movie. The talent on the stage was nothing less than breath-taking including every member in the ensemble. The talent was non-stop as the show moved seamlessly between scenes.

There were many stand-outs in the show that are worth mentioning. Jill-Christine Wiley playing the part of Maria proved from the very first note she hit during her opening number of "The Sound of Music" to the "Finale Ultimo" with the entire cast, Wiley proved she had the talent to pull it off. Along with Wiley as Maria, Mike McLean was perfectly cast as Captain Georg von Trapp. His voice seemed to immediately blow the audience away. Strong and obviously trained well, McLean was up for the task. Especially wonderful was McLean singing with the children "The Sound of Music." It was obvious that the audience was also extremely delighted with it too as it seemed as if the children and McLean were actually family. When McLean sang "Edelweiss," the beauty of the song shone through and brought tears to the eyes of many audience members.

One cannot see THE SOUND OF MUSIC and not include in the listing of most talented performers without mentioning the role of The Mother Abbess. In this particular production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC that role was played by Lauren Kidwell. Kidwell showed true talent and that of countless hours of preparing for such a role. It's obvious that Kidwell's talent was ready to be shared with the audience as she opened the show with "Preludium," not an easy song to sing. Kidwell set the stage for the rest of the evening's performance.

Included in the amazing talent of the evening were the children who were an important part of the show's success. Each one shared intimate moments with the audience and showed what it was like to be so professional and taking their roles seriously.
