Review: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in San Antonio

Everyone knows the story of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. There are worldwide productions of this memorable show that keep audiences coming back time and time and time again. In fact, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is now the longest running Broadway show with over 12,000 performances and still going strong. The latest North American touring production and cast have proven that it's still one that audiences love the most with its timeless story and lessons learned that are not soon forgotten. It reaches into your soul and makes you see there is good in everyone.

As the current North American tour made its way to San Antonio, Texas, the audience was treated to a spellbinding experience. From the first note to the last, everyone was on the edge of their seats waiting to see what would happen next. The new sets and scenery prove that the show is ever revolving and changing yet still holds onto the same tradition of the real story of the misunderstood Phantom and those who are part of his life.

In this production, the Phantom is played by Quentin Oliver Lee who pulled off the role in a spectacular manner. The part of the Phantom is not an easy task and as you watch Lee onstage, you would consider that he must be exhausted at the end of the show, yet, he never shows signs of it as he sang his way through such songs as "The Phantom of the Opera" and "The Music of the Night." Let's not forget the fact that there are many moments in the show that the Phantom shouts and screams in sorrow and sadness, yet Lee continues to keep his voice strong and his stamina alive.

With a strong Phantom, there must be a strong Christine Daae. This production proved to have an actress worthy of the task in Eva Tavares. As she stood front and center to prove her strength as a true product of an opera background education, Tavares belted out the part of Ms. Daae with pure perfection. She complemented Lee when she shared such songs as "I Remember/Stranger Than You Dreamed It" and "The Point of No Return." Equally strong, Tavares connected with Jordan Craig who played Raoul with "All I Ask of You" among other songs.

And speaking of Raoul, Jordan Craig plays a wonderfully, debonair Raoul and seems to be a perfect fit for the role. He shared his talents onstage with Tavares as well as with Lee in "Angel of Music." Craig's voice as well as his compassionate acting proves that he is up for the role of Christine Daae's love interest as well as her protector and guardian.
