Utah Symphony Presents Summer Community Concert Series

The Utah Symphony today announced the lineup for the 2018 summer community concert series in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas, several of which feature outdoor venues. The schedule includes Gina Bachauer Piano Competition Finals on June 22 and 23 at 7 PM at Abravanel Hall, Gallivan Center on Monday June 25, Disney in Concert: "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" on June 27 and 28 at Abravanel Hall, the Utah Symphony at Snowbasin Resort on June 29 and August 7, the Utah Symphony at Thanksgiving Point on July 2, the Utah Symphony at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center on July 3, and Jenny Oaks Baker with the Utah Symphony on August 1 at Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre. Ticketing information is posted with each concert. No tickets are required for the Gallivan Center and Utah Cultural Celebration Center performances, which are free to the public. The summer community concert series allows Utah Symphony to connect people through great live music and collaborate with other venues outside of its regular performances in Abravanel Hall.

Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition showcases the talents of piano finalists aged 19 to 32 years onstage at Abravanel Hall on June 22 and 23. These piano soloists hail from multiple countries and were selected by a panel of international judges to appear onstage with Utah Symphony in this biannual competition.

On Monday June 25 at Gallivan Center Utah Symphony Assistant Conductor Conner Gray Covington will lead the Utah Symphony in an evening of classical favorites. Mr. Covington will lead the orchestra in five other community concerts. Frequent guest conductor John Morris Russell will lead both performances at Snowbasin Resort: the Patriotic Celebration on Friday, June 29 and "Frank and Ella" on August 7.

Admission to both concerts at Gallivan Center and Utah Cultural Celebration Center is free to the public thanks to partnerships with local government programs. The Gallivan Center concert on June 25 is offered in thanks to the Utah Redevelopment Agency (RDA) of Salt Lake City. The RDA strives to improve blighted areas of Salt Lake City, encourage economic development, and support housing for low- and moderate-income households in compliance with the city's master plan.

On June 27 and 28, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" will play live to picture on the big screen at Abravanel Hall in an extension of the Films in Concert Series that featured blockbuster movies including "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "High Noon" and several of the films from the "Harry Potter" film series.

The Utah Cultural Celebration Center concert in West Valley City on July 3 is to thank the community for its support of Salt Lake County's Zoo, Arts and Parks (ZAP) Program. ZAP receives one penny for every $10 in sales tax, and benefits the community by providing grants to over 160 arts and cultural organizations, as well as 30-plus park and recreational facilities. To date, 3.8 million people have received free admission to an arts or cultural event that has been funded by ZAP.

Following the orchestra's residency in Park City for the Deer Valley Music Festival, they will take the stage at Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre on August 1 with Utah native Jenny Oaks Baker. The orchestra has performed at that outdoor venue for the past few summers, presenting the music of film composer John Williams in 2017 and Spanish classical guitarist Pablo Villegas in 2016. The final concert of the Utah Symphony's summer community collaborations will take place at Snowbasin Resort on Tuesday, August 7 featuring vocalists Capathia Jenkins and piano/vocalist Tony DeSare celebrating the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinautra with the orchestra.

These nine concerts are presented in addition to the Utah Symphony's six-week Deer Valley Music Festival, which runs June 30 to August 11 in Park City, Utah. This year, the orchestra will perform 17 concerts during the festival's 15th season: 13 main stage performances at Deer Valley Resort's Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater and four classical chamber concerts at St. Mary's Church.

For these outdoor performances, patrons should remember that, even in the summer, the weather can be chilly after the sun goes down over the mountains of Utah, and are therefore reminded to bring a sweater and a blanket.

Approximate performance lengths run two hours with one 20-minute intermission. Performances will take place rain or shine.

RELATED EVENTSUtah Opera "Random Act of Opera" at Utah Arts Festival During the Utah Arts Festival, Utah Opera will feature two free "Random Acts of Opera" inside Salt Lake Public Library atrium. Baritone Christopher Clayton will perform on June 22 and soprano Clara Hurtado Lee will perform on June 23. Both singers will be accompanied by pianist Emily Williams and perform from 2 PM to 3 PM.
