Review: Disney's MY SON PINOCCHIO at Hale Centre Theatre is Enchanting

Disney's MY SON PINOCCHIO: GEPPETTO'S MUSICAL TALE at Hale Centre Theatre is an enchanting morality tale for the young and young at heart.

The book by David I. Stern tells the story of Pinocchio, the wooden puppet made famous by Disney's 1940 film, through the perspectives of his father, Geppetto, and the Blue Fairy. It features enjoyable music and lyrics by WICKED composer Stephen Schwartz, in addition to "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "I've Got No Strings" from the film (music by Leigh Harline, lyrics by Ned Washington).

The show is written in a theatre for young audiences style and is well suited for families. The cast includes a number of child actors who impress in addition to seasoned adult performers.

Mark Pulham and Raina Larkin Thorne are single cast as Geppetto and the Blue Fairy, respectively. Both are reminiscent of their earnest counterparts in the film while adding additional layers of depth and even winking cynicism. The show is rightly carried on their capable shoulders.

Also single cast are the delightful marionettes, played by Abigail Budge and Emily Tessa Ebert. Through the perfect mix of their performance, direction by David Paul Smith, hair and makeup by Krissa Lent, and costumes by Joy Zhu, they appear to be actual puppets.

The hair, makeup, and costumes make bold statements that pay off with bright colors and intricate designs and details. Jenn Stapley Taylor's scenic design also works well, including a striking Geppetto's toy shop.

MY SON PINOCCHIO plays through September 8, 2018. For tickets, call the box office at 801-984-9000 or visit www.hct.org.
