THE NATIONAL TOUR OF EVITA COMES TO FOLSOM

FOR FIVE PERFORMANCES

The Tony Award-winning Best Musical celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year

(January 16, 2019, Folsom, CA)  Eva Perón enthralled a nation and enchanted the world. Her story unfolds in Evita, the Tony Award-winning Best Musical, a high-flying theatrical experience adored the world over. The national tour of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's groundbreaking musical comes to the Harris Center for five performances, capturing the rise and fall of one of the world's most glamorous first ladies.

This classic Broadway hit comes from the creative talents behind Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Evita captured Broadway with its Grammy Award-winning score, combining Latin music, pop, jazz and musical theatre styles that have captivated audiences for more than 40 years.

Evita comes to the Harris Center for five performances, beginning Thursday, February 21, 2019 at 7:30 pm; Friday, February 22 at 2 and 7:30 pm; Saturday, February 23 at 2 and 7:30 pm. Tickets are $48-83; Premium $92. A 10% discount is available for Friday matinee single tickets. Tickets are available online at www.harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 12 noon to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, CA, facing East Bidwell Street. The production runs two hours, thirty minutes.

Evita is based on the historical story of María Eva Duarte de Perón, a poor Argentinian girl who grows up to be the wife of the president of Argentina, worshipped by her people. As a young woman who longs for an acting career, fame, and fortune, Eva quickly learns that her feminine wiles hold power among a culture, and a political system, run by men. Once she makes it to Buenos Aires, Evita finds fame and power in her powers of seduction, eventually seducing the rising political figure, Juan Perón, who becomes the President of Argentina.

As First Lady of Argentina, she aligns herself with the poor, winning herself, and Perón, popularity among Argentinians. Evita becomes a hero to the poor and the working class—and an enemy to the rich—before she dies of cancer at age 33. A young and unknown revolutionary, Che, narrates the rise and fall of the beloved matriarch of the Argentinian people. This blockbuster musical, made even more famous as a 1996 Hollywood film starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas, shows both the righteous determination, and the ruthless power, of Argentina's 20th century matriarch.

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster hit musical Evita celebrates the 40th anniversary of its 1979 Broadway debut. The events in Evita's life are presented in song, while the story is led by the show's narrator, Che. Well-known numbers from Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical masterpiece include “Don't Cry for Me Argentina,” “Oh What a Circus,” “Buenos Aires” and “Another Suitcase in Another Hall.”

“With what's going on in the world of politics today, there's no better time to re-visit this iconic work of musical theater,” praised director Ferrara. “We are excited to bring Evita to theaters across the country.”

One of the most lauded works in musical theater history, Evita has earned accolades and awards across the globe, including the Olivier Award, Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Musical. The 1980 Grammy Award for Best Cast Show Album went to Rice and Lloyd Webber for Evita. Twenty-five English language recordings of the cast album join foreign language versions in Spanish, German, Japanese, Hebrew, Czech, Korean and Icelandic among many others.

The popular film version of Evita won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for the new song “You Must Love Me,” which Madonna (Eva) sang in the film. “We are excited to include 'You Must Love Me' in our touring production of Evita,” said musical director Lloyd Cooper. “Thanks to Rice and Lloyd Webber, the musical has grown even richer with the addition of this gorgeous ballad.'

Staged by Andy Ferrara with musical direction by Mr. Cooper, Evita reunites Ferrara with long time collaborators Chad Bonaker (lighting design), Nicholas White (sound design) and Thomas Marquez (wardrobe coordinator). Award-winning set designer Bruce Brockman has created a new look for Evita, coordinating with video designer Mark Ciglar to add a special high-tech dimension to this production. For the Folsom performance, the company will bring three huge video walls to Stage One.

“With the increasing use of video on Broadway and in touring productions, we felt it was time to bring this technology to our production of Evita,” continued Ferrara. “With our video walls, we can take the audience cinematically from rural Junin to the Casa Rosada, cross the Atlantic on Eva's Rainbow Tour, bring her back to her beloved descamisados, and do all of it seamlessly onstage.”

Starring as Eva is Miami-based actress Yael Reich, who has been featured in national tours of Rent and Mamma Mia! among other hits. Playing Eva Peron is an honor. “She's such a powerful female,” explained the St. Petersburg, Florida native. “Performing Eva is a challenge for any woman in the theater. She rose up from her situation and blazed a trail. That is so timely—such an iconic character.”

She is joined by Lance Galgon as Che; Mr. Galgon notes that “Che is the quintessential narrator,” explained the northern California native. “He tells the story so the audience understands what was going on in that period of history. Che leaves the audience with a choice—was Eva a saint? Giving all she could do her people? Or did her actions have a more sinister and selfish motivation?”

The versatile Shakespearean actor Gary Barton rounds out the triad as Juan Perón. “Like some of the great kings in Shakespeare, Perón is a flawed character,” explained Barton while in rehearsal in Los Angeles. “On the one hand, he's a power-hungry ruler, always watching out for a competitor to stab him in the back. My job is to find some pathos in his character, whether deserved or not. I think the audience will find that in his tenderness and devotion to Eva. I loved playing Iago—a villain to most—to find out what made him tick. Villains don't look at themselves as villains. Finding that impulse in a dictator like Perón makes Evita exciting for me.”

A talented cast of singer/dancers and orchestra of nine musicians round out the touring company, under the auspices of general manager/executive producer Paul Rambacher.
