Triad Stage Present a Fresh Take On Shakespeare

Triad Stage is continuing its season with a magical story of romance and rivalry. Fall in love. But watch your step. Deep in a wondrous forest, mixed up humans and mischievous creatures turn the world upside down. Let your heart delight in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Performances run October 28 - November 18, 2018. Opening Night is Friday, November 2.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of the most produced and well-loved of all of Shakespeare's plays," says Founding Artistic Director Preston Lane. "All of us at Triad want to approach this play as if for the first time and discover new and surprising ways of seeing the story. I've always been fascinated by the romance, comedy and complexity at the heart of this play."

The creative team includes: director Preston Lane, scenic designer Anya Klepikov, costume designer Hannah Chalman, lighting designer Laura J. Eckelman, sound designer Jane Shaw, and projections designer Nicholas Hussong. The dramaturg is Virginia Hirsch, Denise Gabriel is the movement coach, Christine Morris is the vocal coach, Jim Wren is the fight choreographer, Cindi Rush is the casting director, and the stage manager is Whitney M. Keeter.

The cast includes a number of actors making their Triad Stage debuts: Rebecca Hirota, Joy Jones, Alvin Keith, and UNCSA alumnus Luis Quintero. Current UNCG students Katherine Olson and Linsy Segarra, and current NC A&T student Ishmael Muhammad are also making their debuts. Rajeev Varma from last season's production of Our Town is also returning.

"I'm looking forward to exploring how we move from a rigid world rigid world of rules and power that threatens love and independence to a topsy-turvy dark wood where nothing is what it seems," says Lane. "I love the way that magic and mortals collide. And in counterpoint to it all, a small group of terrible actors try to capture all the romance and tragedy of love gone wrong. For me this play is all about transformation. Worlds transform, people transform, and I'm so excited to find a theatrical language that celebrates the possibility of real transformation."

All performances are at Triad Stage at The Pyrle Theater, located at 232 South Elm Street in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina (between Market and Washington Streets).

Show times for A Midsummer Night's Dream are 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and select Sunday evenings and 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings. Select Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2:00 p.m. There are no matinee performances during previews.

Opening Night is Friday, November 2 at 8:00 p.m. Pay-What-You-Can performances are Tuesday, November 6, and Wednesday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. Wine Tasting Friday is Friday, November 9, prior to the evening's 8:00 p.m. performance.

Technically Talking, a behind-the-scenes discussion with members of the design team is Tuesday, October 30, immediately following the 7:30 p.m. preview performance.

The InSight Series with a noted expert who will be discussing the world of the play will be held on Sunday, November 4, immediately following the 2:00 p.m. matinee performance. The InSight speaker is UNCG professor Jennifer Park, who will speak about "Magic and Monstrosity in Shakespeare's Global Fairyland."

PostScript, a lively, open discussion with the cast, will be held on Thursday, November 8, immediately following the 7:30 p.m. performance.
