Point Park's Conservatory Theatre Co. Presents CABARET

Point Park University's Conservatory Theatre Company opens its inaugural season at the new Pittsburgh Playhouse with the Tony Award-winning musical, Cabaret, with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb and book by Joe Masteroff. Cabaret is directed and choreographed by Zeva Barzell and runs from Oct. 26 through Nov. 11 in the Rauh Theatre at the new Pittsburgh Playhouse, located at 350 Forbes Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Cabaret is set in the pulsing, decadent Kit Kat Club in 1930s Berlin. The story follows free-spirited cabaret singer Sally and American writer Cliff through brassy favorites like the title song, "Cabaret" and "Maybe This Time." As their understanding of life and love is changing, so is the world around them, as the Third Reich begins its dark rise to power. Barzell, the cast, and a band of live musicians take on the 1998 version of the Broadway classic with the talented students of Point Park's Conservatory of Performing Arts.

"This is a brilliant show," said Barzell. "The audience may discover a familiarity with the characters in the story, or perhaps glimpse in a mirror where they can take a look at themselves and decide if they are willing to deny or accept, change or wake up, in the world that is unfolding right now in our own country."

Cabaret is the first production to welcome public audiences this season, and also comes shortly after the passing of Joe Masteroff in September.

The brand new Pittsburgh Playhouse at Point Park University is a 90,411 square-foot theater complex that serves as an artistic laboratory for the prestigious Conservatory of Performing Arts (COPA), comprised of professional, artist educators dedicated to an approach to training that enables students to pursue careers as professionals. COPA includes Departments of Theatre, Dance, and Cinema.

The four-story, state of the art facility, located in Downtown Pittsburgh at 305 Forbes Avenue, is home to the professional theatre company, The REP and student companies -- Conservatory Theatre Company, Conservatory Dance Company and Playhouse Jr. The Pittsburgh Playhouse features the 550-seat PNC Theatre whose backstage and inner workings are visible from the street, resulting in an intentional glimpse into performing arts classes; the 200-seat Highmark Theatre; and the 99-seat Rauh Theatre. The new Pittsburgh Playhouse was designed to be a learning laboratory for all Point Park students, providing experiential learning opportunities in producing, marketing, management, ticketing, and programming. The Playhouse will collaborate with the University's Rowland School of Business and Center for Media Innovation on events, lectures and related programming.

The new Pittsburgh Playhouse's first season runs from Oct. 26, 2018, through April 14, 2019 and features the award-winning musicals Cabaret and Sunday in the Park with George as well as the Broadway smash, History Boys.
