Review: THE WORLD GOES ROUND at Scottsdale Center For The Performing Arts BWW Review: The World Goes Round

With an intimate setting, memorable songs, effective choreography, and brilliant singers, The World Goes Round is delightful from beginning to end. Presented by the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, this musical revue, featuring songs by John Kander and Fred Ebb, is funny, enchanting, heart-breaking, exciting, fun, and wonderful.

The small band, led by Joshua Condon, is situated on stage with the action taking place around it. The talented musicians underscore the skillful warbling of Savannah Alfred, Kathleen Berger, Victoria Fairclough, Michael Paul, and Patrick Russo. The group numbers are well executed and the chemistry shared between the actors is invigorating. Several times, the audience could not contain their enthusiasm as the group danced and belted their faces off.

The solo numbers are presented with heart and adept characterization, which resonated with the audience whether the song was comedic or dramatic. Savannah Alfred (Woman 1) is quite simply a joy to watch. Her energy is contagious, she commands the stage and the attention of the audience. Her voice soars and her comedic timing is sublime.

Kathleen Berger (Woman 3) is resplendent. She is adept with every song she sings. Her emotions are handled with expertise and the audience knows exactly how her character is feeling. Victoria Fairclough (Woman 2) is a fantastic dancer, actress, and singer. Her version of "Maybe This Time" brought me to tears. She perfectly captured the ache and longing the song requires. The women of this cast are superb.

The men are equally divine. Patrick Russo (Man 1) and Michael Paul (Man 2) are expert singers. Russo brings a unique charm to each song, especially "Mr. Cellophane". He manages the choreography effortlessly and provides some of the biggest laughs with his antics. Michael Paul handles comedy and tragedy with masterful ease. "Sara Lee" is child-like and hilarious, and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" is unforgettable.

This cast is magnificent. I had chills throughout the entire performance. "Take it from me", The World Goes Round is not to be missed.
