Irish Arts Center and Baryshnikov Arts Center join forces again to present the U.S. premiere of Colin Dunne's Concert, in which he takes on the widely influential Irish fiddle player Tommie Potts' iconic—and notoriously choreographically challenging—1972 album The Liffey Banks, armed with an LP, tape recorder, portable speakers, and sheets of flooring. Choreographed and performed by Dunne, and created in collaboration with director Sinéad Rushe and composer and sound designer Mel Mercier, Concert, which The Irish Times, in a five-star review, described as “warm, funny, respectful, and irreverent,” comes to Baryshnikov Arts Center November 14-16.

The Joyce Theater Foundation (Linda Shelton, Executive Director) is pleased to present the return of The Sarasota Ballet, following its highly successful, critically acclaimed 2016 Joyce debut, from August 14-19, 2018. The New York Philharmonic announces Foreign Bodies, a one-night-only multidisciplinary event conducted and hosted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, concluding his tenure as The Marie-Jos e Kravis Composer-in-Residence. The concert, Friday, June 8, 2018, at 8:00 p.m., will feature Esa-Pekka Salonen's Foreign Bodies, accompanied by the World Premiere of a live video installation by Tal Rosner; Dan el Bjarnason's Violin Concerto, with Pekka Kuusisto in his New York Philharmonic debut; and Obsidian Tear, a dance work choreographed by Wayne McGregor performed by members of the Boston Ballet (Philharmonic debut) and set to Mr. Salonen's Nyx and Lachen verlernt. Foreign Bodies will be casual and multi-sensory; drinks and conversation will flow as attendees mingle with the performers, who will give additional impromptu performances throughout the event.

Kathie Lee, Hoda and John Cena welcome actors Zacahry Quinto, Matt Bomer and Andrew Rannells, who in addition to being friends are co-stars in the 50th anniversary edition of "The Boys in the Band," the groundbreaking play about a group of gay men who gather for a friend's birthday party. George Street Playhouse presents David Rush's 'Nureyev's Eyes,' now through February 21. Bill Dawes portrays Russian defector and star of ballet and screen, Rudolf Nureyev; William Connell plays painter Jamie Wyeth, the son of famed artist Andrew Wyeth and grandson of illustrator N.C. Wyeth. The production is helmed by George Street Playhouse Resident Artistic Director Michael Mastro.

The Australian Ballet's contemporary triple bill Vitesse is ballet at full voltage. Three stripped-back abstract works by three of the world's leading choreographers show the men and women of the Company at their strongest and fastest, shaking the artform to its foundations. Vitesse runs at Arts Centre Melbourne from11-21 March, and Sydney Opera House from 26 April-16 May.

67-year old ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov proves he still has it in a video campaign with street dancer Lil Buck for Rag and Bone, which showcases a contemporary style.

February 2, 1954 marks the 59th anniversary of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker. Wasn't the ballet presented in December? No, you are wrong. It was first unveiled by the New York City Ballet in 1954 for a few performances. It proved so popular that the company presented the ballet for an extended December run in 1954. It's been like that to this day.

Maria Tallchief, the first Native American to win acclaim as a prima ballerina, was born on January 24, 1925. While she worked with many companies and choreographers, she is most renowned for her collaboration with George Balanchine, first at the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and then, most importantly and famously, at the New York City Ballet. She was married to Balanchine from 1946 until 1952, when the marriage was annulled. Despite this interruption in their private lives they continued their professional association.

On this date in 1898 Raymonda premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The production had music by Alexander Glazunov, choreography by Marius Petipa and an all star cast (for its day) that included Pierina Legnani, Sergey Legat, Olga Peobrajenska and Pavel Gerdt.
