The West Coast premiere of 'Tribes' is now running at the Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum. The Barrow Street Theatre production of Nina Raine's penetrating new comic drama about belonging, family and the value of communication continues through April 14, 2013. Nina Raine takes the problems of a hearing vs. nonhearing world to a new and much higher level in her Drama Desk Award winning play Tribes now making its West Coast premiere at the Mark Taper Forum. Whereas Mark Medoff introduced audiences to the deaf community in his brilliant Children of a Lesser God, Raine goes way beyond basics to highlight the issues that arise when the deaf communicate through oralism - speaking/reading lips - as opposed to ASL (American Sign Language). When a deaf man Billy (Russell Harvard) grows up in a dysfunctional household dictated by selfish artist parents and siblings who have no clear line of communication, the problems become intensely unbearable. With outstanding direction from the director of the original New York production David Cromer and a first-rate cast, most of whom are original cast members, Tribes is dramedy at its finest hour, educating, stimulating and totally enveloping its audience.

Tribes celebrated its Opening Night on Sunday, March 10 at the Mark Taper Forum. Written by Nina Raine, the CTG and Barrow Street Theatre production is directed by David Cromer in the play's West Coast Premiere. Celebrities such as Guillermo Diaz, Jonathan Groff, Deidre Hall, Ian Harding, Jane Kaczmarek, Alan Mandell, Ron Perlman, Jeff Perry, Nina Raine (playwright), Peter Roth, Joan Van Ark and Charlayne Woodard attended the opening festivities, and BroadwayWorld has photos below!

Center Theatre Group has announced the cast of the upcoming production of "Tribes" at the Mark Taper Forum which will feature cast members from the acclaimed off-Broadway production at Barrow Street Theatre. With the upcoming release of his first feature film, NOT FADE AWAY, SOPRANOS creator David Chase recently confirmed to Showbiz 411 that plans for a movie based upon his hit HBO show have been scrapped.

The Flea Theater presents the New York premiere of Restoration Comedy by Pultizer Prize-finalist Amy Freed. It will be directed by Ed Sylvanus Iskandar, a 2012 Drama Desk Award nominee for These Seven Sicknesses, and stars The Bats, the resident Acting Company at The Flea. The producers and company of the acclaimed Off-Broadway hit play Tribes welcome the return of Nick Westrate, winner of a 2012 Special Drama Desk Award for his versatility in the 2011-2012 season (Unnatural Acts, Love's Labor's Lost, and Galileo), who will assume the role of Daniel beginning Monday, November 19, 2012 at The Barrow Street Theatre (27 Barrow Street). Will Brill, who originated the role, will give his final performance Sunday, November 18, 2012.

The producers of Off-Broadway's Tribes have announced new additions to the clan beginning September 4th: Lee Roy Rogers (Orson's Shadow) will assume the role of Beth and Dina Thomas (See How They Run) will assume the role of Ruth, and beginning September 25th: Susannah Flood (A Civil War Christmas) will assume the role of Sylvia, joining Will Brill (Our Town) as Daniel, Russell Harvard (There Will Be Blood) as Billy, and Jeff Still (August: Osage County) as Christopher.

Producers Scott Morfee, Jean Doumanian and Tom Wirtshafter today announced the complete cast for the North American premiere of Nina Raine's new play Tribes, directed by multiple Lortel and Obie Award-winner David Cromer. The cast will feature Will Brill (Our Town), Russell Harvard (There Will Be Blood), Steppenwolf Theatre co-founder Jeff Perry (August: Osage County), Susan Pourfar (When the Rain Stops Falling), Gayle Rankin (The Illusion at Signature Theatre), and Academy Award® nominee and Emmy Award®-winner Mare Winningham (Georgia). (This production marks a reunion for Mr. Perry, who hasn't appeared Off Broadway in nearly thirty years, and Ms. Winningham. They played husband and wife on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," and will also play husband and wife in Tribes.)
