“Park and bark” is a term usually used derogatively when speaking about opera--a kind of old-style singing that involves standing still and bursting forth in song, with little or no acting skills involved. There certainly wasn't anything old-fashioned about the operas or the group of young singers who performed them at NYU's black box theatre on May 7 (except perhaps their good training) in “Park and Bark--6 Mini-Operas about Brooklyn's Fort Greene Park.”

Classical Action: Performing Arts Against AIDS continues the 2015-16 Michael Palm Series of house concerts in New York City on Saturday, February 27, 2016, with a performance featuring a stellar quartet of vocalists: bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni, soprano Anita Hartig, baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, and tenor Matthew Polenzani. Held at the magnificent Tribeca loft of Simon Yates and Kevin Roon, the event begins at 6:30pm with wine and hors d'oeuvres, followed by the concert at 7:30pm. What happens when you combine four performers, treasured Broadway tunes, pop-up charts brimming with backstage trivia and outrageous remarks on stage? POP UP MUSICAL, a Broadway revue with a sense of humor previewing January 21, 22, opening January 23 continuing through June 14, 2015 at the Plymouth Playhouse.

While reviewing What Makes a Man (WMAM), now playing at the Berkley Street Theatre, it's tempting to comment on what's not there, what could and should be there, rather than what is there. What is on display is a marvelous musical stage portrait of Charles Aznavour, the world renowned French singer/songwriter, actor and political activist/diplomat. A man of the world, he is capable of singing in five languages. One of the last surviving 'showmen,' he still is capable of filling the world's most prestigious concert halls. For example, a year ago he performed for the first time in 25 years at London's Royal Albert Hall. Demand was so great, a second concert was booked there for this past June.

The Theatre Project's 'Exciting and innovative' rep company TP&co, presents their contemporary adaptation of Marat/Sade, Peter Weiss' avant-garde drama, with a fresh take on a dangerous play that taps directly into an undercurrent of social unease. Directed by Christian Amato with original music by Danny Gray, Marat/Sade opens tonight, May 30, and runs through June 13 at the historic Players Theatre in the heart of the Greenwich Village.
