by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Jul 8, 2015

First published more than 200 years ago, Jane Austen's famous novel Pride and Prejudice comes to American Players Theatre (APT) and revisits significant gender issues audiences might assume have been resolved. Former Milwaukee Reperatory Theater Artistic Director Joseph Hanreddy and acclaimed J.R. Sullivan adapted one of the world's most popular novels into a compelling, senstive stage play that breathes life into Austen's romantic couples who search for their futures on Spring Green's Up the Hill stage this summer.

BWW Reviews: Chuckling with Chekov, VANYA AND MASHA AND SONIA AND SPIKE
by Amanda Finn - Apr 10, 2015

A quaint, well-loved home is where the scene is set. Minimal set dressings to mask the beautiful awkwardness of the first scene - with remnants of Anton Chekov's greatest works scattered upon the mantle. A seagull, a sister, a cluster of cherry blossoms, and a brood of hens watch over the home from their perch. These little trinkets are entirely appropriate since three of the four title roles were named after Chekov's characters. Vanya, the brother in the play, blames the unfortunate circumstance of his unusual name on his having professors for parents.

BWW Reviews: APT's A DOCTOR'S DILEMMA Dissects Truths to Life and Death
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Aug 22, 2014

“I can't afford to save my life,” Dr. Blenkinsop tells a cadre of more successful physicians in George Bernard Shaw's The Doctor's Dilemma. Spring Green's American Players Theatre presents Shaw's riveting drama at the Up the Hill Theatre this fall, a diverting play that discusses contemporary medical issues even though written over 100 years ago. In Shaw's play, Blenkinsop represents a physician who serves the less fortunate in London society, and when he himself becomes sick, has few means or time to cure his patients, much less himself.

BWW Reviews: APT's Sarah Day Delivers Magnificent THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Jul 18, 2014

Perhaps the power of American Players Theatre can be determined by an audience's silence when exiting the Touchstone Theater after a Sunday evening performance, the haunting quiet almost reverent appreciation for what had transpired minutes before. In Spring Green, Sarah Day illuminates the stage in an approximately one hour forty five minute no intermission performance. APT's one woman play retells award winning author's Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking, a play she adapted in 2007 and based on her memoir from the year after her husband John Gregory Dunne died in 2003 A time when Didion simultaneously coped when her daughter Quintana suffered from septic shock, often lying n the hospital's ICU hovering between life and death.
